Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was already signed through next season with a club option for the 2015 season, but the Red Sox aren't taking any chances in losing him anytime soon. Pedroia has agreed to a seven-year extension worth $100 million, confirms Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.
The reported deal also includes a full no-trade clause, so it appears Pedroia is set to remain in a Red Sox uniform through the 2021 season.
Pedroia, 29, is hitting .308/.385/.422 with 25 doubles, six homers, 57 RBI and 58 runs this season. If not for some heavy hitters like Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis, Pedroia would likely be getting some pretty serious run for being on his way to a second MVP.
The deal is good timing for the Red Sox, as Robinson Cano hits free agency this winter and may have set the bar high for a Pedroia signing. The average annual value of the extension is $14.28 million. Two second basemen -- Cano and Chase Utley -- make more than that this season. Considering Pedroia is an elite second baseman, this is a fair deal.
At least at present. He'll be 37 when the deal expires.
News of the deal was first reported by Rob Bradford of WEEI
