nhl.comGREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Ryan Callahan signed a three-year contract to stay a Ranger in July and on Monday he got his second big nod of the offseason the club named him the 26th captain in franchise history.
"Ryan Callahan embodies all the leadership qualities we seek from our captain. He leads by example with courage and a tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor." -- Rangers GM and President Glen Sather Marc Staal and Brad Richards, who signed a nine-year, $60 million contract to become a Ranger on July 2, were named as the alternates.
"Ryan Callahan embodies all the leadership qualities we seek from our captain," Rangers GM and President Glen Sather said. "He leads by example with courage and a tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor."
Callahan, 26, a native of Rochester, N.Y., served as an alternate captain behind Chris Drury for the past two seasons.
Callahan was originally drafted by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2004 Entry Draft and is entering his fifth season in New York. He established career-highs in goals (23), assists (25) and points (48) last season despite the fact that he missed 22 games with a broken hand. Callahan has 76 goals and 68 assists for 144 points in 284 career regular-season games.
Staal served as an alternate captain last season while Richards has worn the 'A' on his sweater both in Tampa and Dallas.
No real surprise here but congratulations to Callahan on being named the captain, rightfully deserved.
Was a little surprised they went with Richards as an Assistant captain though, would have expected Dubinksy to maybe get it.
