Protestors Want To Abolish 'Chief Wahoo' Logo

Native Americans and their supporters demonstrated outside the opening home game of the Indians demanding that the baseball team abolish its "Chief Wahoo" logo, according to an ESPN.com report.
The long-standing logo, which appears on some team caps and jerseys, depicts a grinning, red-faced cartoon with a feather headband.

Don't even see how that logo can be insensitive.

Huge grin, big nose, feather sticking out its head? It's stereotyping.

Which would lead to the better question, why the fuck are naming your team and creating a logo after a race, a race that the United States forcibly removed from their homes through legislation enacted by Andrew Jackson and have been discriminated against in a great way? They named a holiday after a guy who enslaved and slaughtered Native Americans for fucks sakes.

It's not a big deal to white people, and they don't see it as offensive because it doesn't depict them and racial discrimination of Native Americans tends not to be talked about as much as it should be. But CLEARLY it is offensive to Native Americans, and that's honestly all that matters.

I can understand the Redskins because the name is offensive. I don't understand this one.

You can go ahead throw out all kinds of facts about how we wronged Native Americans, I know all about it. Doesn't mean the logo is offensive.

Does this mean that any and all depictions of Native Americans in sports is stereotypical and offensive? Is that what it's come to?

And would they still be upset if the Indians changed the image to something that represented Native Americans in a positive manner? Idk, I've just never seen that logo and thought it was offensive, but I sure as hell have always thought the Redskins name was offensive.

Yes it does mean that. Context is important. This is a race that has not had a fair shake. Why are you depicting them in your sports logo? Most every logo is exaggerated, that's what makes it a logo, so you shouldn't be throwing an entire race on it.

How well would the New York Blacks, with a logo of a black male with big ears, big lips, wearing a backwards hat go over in society?

These would never be approved or considered socially acceptable if presented today. The only reason these Native American nicknames and logos stand is because of decades of acceptance, that people just refuse to break away from.

New York Jews would be great. And the San Francisco Chinamen? Talk about great concession food!

Honestly I'm at the point where I just want them to change it (this and the Redskins name) so we don't have to hear about them complaining about it anymore.

The Logo is offensive because it's a caricature. It's not even representative of what Native Americans even look like. It's an exaggerated cartoon image. That's why it's offensive, and whether or not it's offensive is NOT up for debate. It's very obviously offensive.
