With Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in the final year of his contract and with no signs of any talks toward an extension, Lewis could be nudging toward the end of his eight-year run as coach of the team.

The performance of the team Lewis coaches isn't helping.

Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer argues that the Bengals' problems trace to "poor coaching," which will do nothing to push team president Mike Brown toward inking Lewis to a new deal.

Whether and to what extent Lewis will find a strong demand for his services elsewhere remains to be seen. On one hand, Lewis arguably has cooked the best possible meal with a cart full of groceries collected haphazardly by Brown at the five and dime. On the other hand, Lewis has led the team to only two playoff appearances, and zero postseason wins.

Still, there are teams that could find Lewis attractive, given his willingness to take a back seat to Brown. For someone like Cowboys owner/G.M. Jerry Jones, that could be the most important quality Lewis brings to the table.

Regardless of where Lewis ends up in 2011, it's looking more and more likely that he won't be running the Bengals -- barring a dramatic turnaround for the 2-4 team.

With as much offensive talent the Bengals feature this season, what is the excuse? You could argue the defense couldn't stop a youth football team's drive but what happened to the defense that overacheived from a year ago? With as much talent and as good on paper as the Bengals look, their problems are consistency and that boils down to execution. Who's fault is it when players don't execute? Coaches. Marvin Lewis has been one of those coaches that has found a way to put together a big season, just when we're thinking he's about to be fired. Seemingly, Marvin may be out of magic and a change in coaching staff could be the beginning of a major turnover within the Bengals organization. At what point do the Bengals come to the same reality the Rams did with Bulger?

I agree, it is poor coaching. The team never looks prepared, never play with any kind of urgency. The team represents the head coach very well and the results how. While he has did some good things in Cincinnati it's time to move on and start new.

I believe its poor execution. We got what we need and our plays are right. But like Ochco Quitting early on routes and what-not, poor execution is to blame

While it is poor execution, I believe it's also poor coaching. It's a little bit of both, it's not just this year this has went on. Since Marvin Lewis became head coach the Bengals have been average and that's it.

Like I said in my initial post fellas.....the Bengals aren't executing properly and execution is the fault of the Coaching staff.

They just seem phenomenally complacent and unprepared at all times. The lackluster effort being put forth by Chad and T.O. in the fourth quarter is ridiculous, and if they don't have the urge to play hard on their own, then it's on the coaching staff to demand a better effort out of them.
