Pistons To Give More Time To Young Players

John Loyer suggested the playing rotation could change some in April as official playoff elimination draws near for the Detroit Pistons.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jonas Jerebko have regained their status in the rotation, while some of the younger players, such as rookies Peyton Siva and Tony Mitchell, and Italian sharpshooter Gigi Datome, await their chances.
"You'll see different guys throughout the lineup, which you kind of have," Loyer said.  "But no drastic changes at this point."

Really makes no sense at all not to do this. I think Gigi and Tony can be rotational players, would be nice to see what they have.

Jonas Jerebko Unsure If He'll Exercise Player Option On Final Season Of Deal
Apr 02, 2014 2:33 PM EDT

Jonas Jerebko discussed his future with the Detroit Pistons, and the forward is unsure about whether he will exercise the player option on the final season of his contract for 2014-15.

"I don't know," Jerebko said. "Eight more games. Eight more games.

"Everything is going to play a part of my decision but I'm not thinking about that right now. We'll see what happens this summer. It's not been a good year. We'll see what happens."

Jerebko, 27, is due to make $4.5 million next season but said he will not factor that into a decision.

"I don't play the game for money," Jerebko said. "We'll see what happens when I have a discussion with my agent. Like I said, eight more games to finish the season out then I'll start thinking about the future."

i always liked him but not at that price. if he wants to opt out, better for us.

jonas also changed agents so its really lookin like hes going to opt out. him opting out and billups possibly retiring would give us close to a max contract without monroe being extended.

that'd possibly be used with a new gm to put his stamp on the team by signing a free agent or two, or what id hope they'd do by using it to take back some salary and get rid of smoove.

I don't know which way to look at it, Pistons fans seem happy about losing because of the possibility of keeping their pick.

But if you really look at it, you're looking at guys like Ennis, Harrell, McDermott, Saric, etc. How big of a difference is it from drafting at 8 last season and this season? I've said all along, once you get past those initial three or four guys there really isn't much that distinguishes this class from last years class, which is probably historically bad.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that a core of Jennings, Smith, Monroe, and Drummond which seems to be locked in place, can't win games. Is a coach that is an actual difference maker like Popovich or Carlisle coming to save the day? I seriously doubt it, and I don't think a rookie that gets picked at seven, eight, or nine will be that difference maker either, right now or in the long run.

Well considering Marcus Smart (who would've went #2 in last year's draft), is the #8 prospect on ESPN right now, I'd say there's a difference.

From picks 7-16, draft express has at some point, Noah Vonleh, Aaron Gordon, Clint Capela, Gary Harris and Nik Staukas. I think all those guys can make a big impact in their careers.

It's funny because most of us agree you shouldn't put too much consideration into ESPN, but yet you turn to them quite a bit in these discussions.

ESPN can have Smart listed 8th all they want, he will be gone before then.

Alright then, put somebody else in this group as the 8th best player:

Wiggins
Embiid
Parker
Gordon
Randle
Exum
Saric
Harris
Stauskas
Vonleh
whoever

All are better than Kentavious Caldwell Pope, the 8th picked player in 2013. ESPN was just used for a ranking of the drafted players. Could've went to DX where Aaron Gordon is ranked 8th.

Thanks for making this about me though.

I wouldn't take Marcus Smart in the top 10.

His defensive ability is hard to argue with, but his long range shooting is so horrid, literally showed no improvement there. And while he's certainly not a bad passer, he's not John Wall, and he's going to find it harder to overcome it. Not quite the athlete that Wall or even Westbrook are at PG.

Shouldn't have said top 10, that's a stretch on my part, just not his biggest fan.

As opposed to not keeping our pick at all? I'll take the pick.

I did not say that you should not want to keep that pick. What I did say, is that as a Pistons fan I would be more concerned with the fact that my team can't win games with the core of my team locked in place, rather than being concerned over if I keep that pick or not. I guess you can do both, but the point I'm trying to push is that who ever the pick will likely not contribute to improving next years version of the Pistons, and honestly that player may never have a real big impact on the future of the franchise. Not to say he won't be a good player, but he'll possibly be a replaceable player, and not to sound harsh, but until the Pistons can (if) fix the mess that Dumars' has created, that rookie will likely just be along for the ride of a dysfunctional team.
