Phil Jackson revealed Friday that he plans to coach the Lakers through the end of next season (2009-10) and then will retire. He made his comments to fellow Hall of Famer Magic Johnson during a taped interview that will be shown during ABC's national telecast of the Lakers-San Antonio Spurs game on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center. Lakers team owner Jerry Buss said during an interview Nov. 9 with beat reporters that he expects Jackson to coach well past the end of his current contract, which ends after the 2009-10 season.

he didnt say he was going to retire, he said that he's gonna take it one year at a time.
If the Lakers win a title though within 1 of these 2 years, he might consider it

and if the owner believes he would coach longer, I'd listen. Phil's girlfriend, basically his unofficial wife, is the owner's daughter

If he did retire, that would definately be weird watching the Lakers after that. He might be just like Joe Pa though, you think he`ll retire, but than he keeps coming back. Joe Pa takes it one year at a time. Not saying Phil will be coaching until he`s Joe Pa or Bowdens age, but he will be there a couple more years, or at least until the Lakers win their next title.

Hard to get a good coach to leave their ranks. He'll be in his 70's or 80's before he quits

Nah Phil is almost done.
Honestly, his hip replacement has taken a toll on him.
He even said 82 games is becoming a stretch for himself.
Key words is Byron Scott is his replacement I am sure...
That's why he hasn't taken another off from another team.

Byron Scott would be a good replacement if Phill does decide to retire. But I dont think that will happen.

I saw the interview last night and he said nothing of retirement. Magic asked him when he was going to be done with coaching, and he did say 2010, but he said it with a smirk. He pointed out that 2010 is the year his contract expires and that he has told Jerry Buss that he doesn't want to discuss beyond 2010 until 2010 is here.

Unless the Lakers can clinch another NBA title by then, Phil stays in LA beyond 2010.

Kraig said it right though.
When Jackson does decide to leave, Byron Scott WILL coach the Lakers.
Thats almost set in stone
