LOS ANGELES -- The desire is there for Brett Favre to return for another season with the Minnesota Vikings. If he doesn't return, it will be because his surgically repaired ankle won't allow him to, the quarterback said Wednesday night.

"It starts with the ankle," Favre said in an interview with ESPN's Hannah Storm backstage at the ESPY Awards. "I can walk fine, but you don't walk in football."

Favre said that he is still not completely healthy. "I guess at 40 I may never be," he said.

Favre said he thought his recovery from ankle surgery -- this Friday will mark eight weeks since the operation -- would have been quicker.

"I had hoped it would have been a little bit better at this point," he said.

Favre said his hurting ankle affects his entire body.

"When you wake up in the morning and your feet hurt it kind of makes the rest of your body hurt," he said. "And If you've been sacked 700 times that usually adds to it."

Favre said he knows the Vikings are a great team: "I know that now, I knew it last year," he said.

However, if he does return, he wants to make sure the Vikings are getting what they expect.

"I would love to play and be the best I can possibly be," he said. "That's what I'm working toward right now."

Favre had hoped to make a quicker decision on a return this time around, but that didn't happen.

"It's not desire," Favre said.

He said the "goosebumps come right back ... not that they ever left" when watching the highlight of his last-second touchdown pass last season to Greg Lewis, which won the pair of teammates the Best Play Award at the ESPYs.

"But physically, I want to know if I can play and make those type of plays," Favre said. "I don't know if I can ever answer that. At least in my mind that's how I feel where I have to be."

The old Favre antics about wanting to play at the best he can, and not letting down the Vikings. Just shut up, you will be playing for them week one, it doesn't matter.

Nothing confirmed yet...fishy. Favre won't agree he actually is, his family won't, the Vikings won't....sketchy.

According to ESPN's little bottom line piece of <Censored>, even though the VIkings and Favre have yet to confirm yesterday's reports that Favre is retiring, the Vikings have apparently offered Brett a pay raise in a valiant effort to bring him out of retirement.

He's supposed to make $13M in 2010-2011, and they've offered him $16M guaranteed AND $4M in incentives.

Brad Childress claims Brett hasn't told him he's retiring... I'm turning on the BULL<Censored> Meter on that one.

Apparently he has also told espn's Ed Werder this morning that he has not made any retirement decisions and will play if healthy. He apparently has an appointment with the doctor who performed the ankle surgery, next week and that will give him a better idea...

also, TE Visanthe Shiancoe says he heard from other Vikings players that Favre texted them on Tuesday and said he plans to retire, but SHiancoe says he never got a message from Favre.

Brett Favre... a better liar and manipulator than George Costanza? We'll find out....

Favre laughed when Werder told him that Shaincoe is saying he got a retirement text from Favre. Favre said, "that's why I love Shianc", which sounds to me like Shiancoe is <Censored>ing with him and the media.

He will come back, he just doesn't want to play in preseason or do anything in training camp.

Brett Favre is the most over-hyped football athlete ever. You would think he would learn his lesson after he lost his team the chance to play in the Super Bowl.

I hope someone gives this <Censored> a real reason to retire.

Like a broken <Censored>ing leg.

BREAKING NEWS

Brett Favre reportedly is on a plane en route to Minnesota after three of his teammates traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to get an answer from the quarterback on his playing status for the 2010 season.

WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg reported Tuesday that Favre departed on a plane bound for Minnesota at 2:15 p.m. ET but that there were no details regarding whether Favre planned to play for the Vikings this season.

Minnesota Vikings guard Steve Hutchinson, defensive end Jared Allen and placekicker Ryan Longwell traveled to Hattiesburg on Monday to get an answer from Favre, sources told ESPN.

FoxSports.com reported Tuesday that Favre told the three players that he would play for the Vikings this season.

The Vikings' urgency to get an answer turned to panic Monday when Favre was reluctant to report to the team this week and wouldn't give word if he was coming, sources told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

The team, according to sources, dispatched Allen, Longwell and Hutchinson to talk him into coming. None of the three players was back for practice Tuesday. Their mission was to get Favre and when he boarded a plane Tuesday afternoon, that was accomplished.

In many ways, the offense is in more disarray than a year ago, and the team needed Favre as quickly as possible. Percy Harvin was away from July 31 until Monday because of the deaths of two people who were close to him, and because of his migraine headaches.

Adrian Peterson has missed most of camp with a hamstring injury. Sidney Rice is sidelined with a hip problem.

The players' envoy to Mississippi was first reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

When asked about the report of Favre's plane heading to Minnesota and whether Favre would play for the team in 2010, Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell hedged.

"That's all speculation right now," Bevell said. "If it were to come to pass, Coach [Brad Childress] would make that call."

It was one year ago Wednesday that Favre reported to the Vikings last season.

Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder earlier this month that he will play this season if healthy. The quarterback, who had ankle surgery in May, met with Dr. James Andrews last week to try to determine why the ankle is still bothering him.

Favre has waffled on retiring every summer since 2002. It led to an ugly parting with the Packers that got him traded from Green Bay to the Jets in 2008.

After a so-so season in New York, he announced his retirement in early 2009 for the second time, then reconsidered and signed with the Vikings.

Information from ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert and The Associated Press was used in this report.
