Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided and now will be allowed to become an unrestricted free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document.

Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn'’t. His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn?t have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.
Raiders are a mess lol

If Rob Ryan stays in Cleveland I think we have a realistic shot at picking him up.

Why the hell would they even include incentives in that contract in the first place? Wasn't he already the highest paid corner in the NFL?

LOL Charles Woodson all over again.

First you let Cable go, now he doesn't want to pay one of the best if not the best corner in the NFL.

Every time the Raiders take a nice step forward they take two or three steps back.

Hey...hold on a second... Charles Woodson wasn't even half the player he is today, back in Oakland. Definitely not the same situation as Asomugha...Woodson was still regarded as a huge bust back then

He was considered a huge bust after his stint in Oakland? I didn't know 4 straight Pro Bowls while with the team meant you were a giant bust.

Although I guess it's not the same as it was really injuries that derailed Woodson's stint in Oaktown more than anything. In this case it was just ASO's failure to reach incentives which is a given since no one throws his way.

I don't think he would want to go to NY.
Always the talk about Revis being the best corner, I don't see him wanting to join forces with him.
If anything I do see New England.

I thought I read an article last year saying he would love to play with Revis. But I'm not sure with a new CBA if the Jets will be able to afford to add another huge contract on their payroll.

I don't care what we have to do financially to get this dude on the Jets, we better fucking do it. Aso and Revis with Jim Leonhard finally back being our leader on defense next year would be flat out nasty. Easily the best pass defense in the league by a long shot.

Why do the Jets have to "better do it."
Is it a need for them to have the best 2 CB's in the league?

Take the time to read what I said, not skim, not browse...but read it.

Then explain to me where I claim Woodson was a huge bust after his stint in Oakland.

you Jets fans think way too highly of yourselves sometimes, haha.

Cromartie is a great #2 CB. He just had a bad matchup against Garcon yesterday. Don't throw the guy under the bus for that, man.

There is no way the Jets could afford him.

Exactly lol. Act like not getting Nnamdi is going to be a travesty lol.
I'll gladly take Cromartie.
