Maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand why Wes Welker received a lower score in passing than Branch or Hernandez. 8 catches for 160 yards and 2 TDs isn't mediocre

oh and can I get Broncos and Raiders offense + defense?

Kam;

If you’ve never been to Pro Football Focus’ website, it’s worth your time. They watch all the plays of every game and rate the players based on their performance. You can see their grading criteria here. Players’ ratings seem to most often end up between around +3.0 and -3.0 for any individual game, but can vary greatly based on performance. This will be a general look at a few of the stats from this week’s game; to see the full game ratings, go to Pro Football Focus and sign up for their Premium Stats service.
Against the Titans, the Jaguars rated a total of +10.6 on offense and +3.6 on defense. Most notably, they rated +7.7 in run defense. For comparison’s sake, in 2010 Pro Football Focus rated the Jaguars at +16.5 in run defense for the entire season. Let’s take a look at a few notable players from this week’s game:
Highest-rated offensive player: QB Luke McCown (+2.6) – McCown played a solid game overall on Sunday. He was efficient, didn’t really make any mistakes, and kept drives moving. I was surprised Maurice Jones-Drew wasn’t the highest-rated offensive player, but his second-half stats (11 carries for 32 yards) were underwhelming.
Lowest-rated offensive player: LG Will Rackley (-2.0) – Rackley struggled against Tennessee, giving up a sack and also picking up a penalty. Overall, though, -2.0 isn’t that terrible of a game. Rackley is a third-round rookie from Lehigh, so I don’t think anyone was expecting to be an immediate superstar. All part of the learning process.
Highest-rated defensive player: MLB Paul Posluszny (+5.1) – Posluszny had a great game, and you could tell by watching, not just by looking at these numbers. Pro Football Focus rated Posluszny positively in run-stopping, coverage, and pass-rushing. He only picked up four tackles, but all four of them were “stops” (plays considered an offensive failure). He also had a pass defensed and two quarterback pressures, the most notable of which being the one where Matt Hasselbeck escaped and flipped a wounded duck to Kenny Britt, who took it for an 80-yard touchdown. Posluszny was everything the Jaguars wanted when they signed him to a huge free agent deal in the offseason.
Lowest-rated defensive player: CB Rashean Mathis (-5.6) – Tough game for Rashean. Though he picked up three tackles and a stop, Mathis also committed two penalties. Mathis was targeted eight times Sunday, and all eight passes were completed for a total of 100 yards and two touchdowns (CORRECTION: I mis-read the stats…according to Pro Football Focus, Mathis actually allowed a total of 137 yards and two touchdowns). I’m not sure I agree with Kenny Britt’s touchdown being attributed to Mathis, but I’m not the one creating the stats. Anyway, suffice to say Mathis had a tough game; hopefully he can bounce back next week against the Jets.
Other notables:
LT Eugene Monroe (+2.4) – Pro Football Focus didn’t like Monroe last year; they rated him -15.6 overall in 2010. However, Monroe kept his quarterback clean Sunday, allowing one quarterback hit but no sacks. He also got good push in the run game, compiling a +1.3 run-blocking rating.
RB Deji Karim (+2.0) – It’s not the rating that’s surprising: Karim was on the field for 36 snaps (19 passing plays) to 33 snaps for Maurice Jones-Drew (6 passing plays). If this is a trend, we could see Jones-Drew becoming more of a first and second-down back, with Karim picking up snaps on more passing downs.
RT Guy Whimper (-0.1) – Whimper exceeded my expectations. He allowed two pressures, but for the most part was able to give Luke McCown time to throw. Solid performance by the backup tackle, but the challenge will be much tougher next week against the Jets. Hopefully Eben Britton can return to the lineup soon, but a nice week for Whimper.
CB Derek Cox (+2.5) – Cox played well in the limited time he was on the field, as his +2.5 rating was accumulated over only 29 snaps. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, Cox had to leave the game with an injury to his chest/rib area, and there’s no indication yet as to how much time he’ll have to miss. Hopefully for the Jaguars he can return soon.
LB Clint Session (+0.1) – Session managed to put up a decent rating despite his whiff on Britt’s touchdown catch. That said, the notable thing here is that Session was on the field for SIX snaps. That’s right…six. Part of the reason was because Tennessee spent the entire second half throwing the ball, but that’s still a very small snap count for a $6 million a year linebacker.
DT Leger Douzable (+1.8) – Douzable racked up his +1.8 rating in only eight snaps, including a +1.3 as a pass-rusher. He picked up a QB hit and a batted pass in only four pass rushes. Very nice game from the backup defensive tackle.
DEs Jeremy Mincey (-1.6) and Matt Roth (-1.8) – I really expected better rating from these two considering how well the pass rush seemed to do. Roth especially was surprising; he rated -1.9 as a pass-rusher even though he picked up a sack on the game’s first play. Maybe my eyes were deceiving me throughout the game, or maybe these ratings are simply a bit off.
DT Nate Collins (0.0) – Collins is listed as having been on the field for one play…in pass coverage. Just weird.
So that’s the breakdown…the Jaguars played a solid game overall, and rated pretty similarly to what I expected. What do you think of this week’s ratings? Let me know, or hit up the guys from Pro Football Focus on Twitter; they’re always up for a good football discussion!
