Spent a decent amount of time on this. Open for criticism and discussion. Remember people, no one can predict the future. I'm going off my several years of studying the draft, watching college and professional football.
1. Cleveland Browns - Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M - It is no secret that the Browns are in desperate need of a quarterback and sitting at the first overall pick in the draft, they could do just that. However, with a second first at 12 and the 2017 draft having no game-changer at the quarterback position, the Browns will do best player available, and what a player that is. This selection and situation is exactly what the Houston Texans faced when they took Jadevon Clowney first overall in 2014, where the Texans had a huge grade on him. However, the Browns are the Browns and they could go a different direction.
2. San Francisco 49ers - Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - When it’s all said and done, Watson will be the highest rated quarterback heading into the draft. He, right now, is the most pro-ready of the potential first-round quarterbacks and has proven that he can get it done when it matters, torching the closest thing there is to an NFL defense in college football in Alabama. He has the arm strength to make the throws and has good accuracy. The only question mark that one can see over Watson is the 17 interceptions he threw in 2016. That is a bit worrisome but with the 49ers hitting the reset button with a new general manager and a new coach, a new quarterback is what they need.
3. Chicago Bears - Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina - The Bears have the opportunity to finally move away from the Jay Cutler era. After putting together 3-13 season, there is no better time to start over. The likes of Brian Hoyer and even Matt Barkley took snaps this season. With John Fox at the helm, I feel that Trubisky is the better fit to go third, opposed to DeShone Kizer. Trubisky may have the largest upside of the quarterbacks in the draft, but also has the most question marks. Trubisky is your NFL quarterback. 6-foot-3, 220 pounds with the arm strength to make the throws. He has one year under his belt as a starter where he threw for 3,748, 30 TDs and just 6 interceptions.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama - The Jaguars need some help, in just about every position. They have the opportunity to take arguably the second best player in the entire draft at the 4th slot. There are some speculations surrounding Allen due to the durability of his shoulder, which has seen him slip a bit. The Jags’ were not able to apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks in 2016, and adding Allen to slot in next to Malik Jackson in the middle of their defensive line will definitely help. He did record 10.5 sacks in 14 games last year for the Crimson Tide.
5. Tennessee Titans - Jamal Adams, S, LSU - Picking at the Rams selection, the Titans have the chance to add the best safety and secondary player available in the draft to help boost their defense. They took strides in 2016, finishing 9-7 and second in the AFC South to the Houston Texans. Adding the caliber of player that Adams is, the Titans defense will be able to keep up with their offense in 2017.
6. New York Jets - DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame - Many would pick Leonard Fournette to be taken by the Jets. Kaizer, to some, is the number-one quarterback in the draft. The Jets would love to be able to move on from the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty, who have seen them too a 5-win season. Here’s their opportunity. It’s not the quarterback the Jets would love to see fall to six, but it’s a quarterback.
7. San Diego Chargers - Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State - The Chargers can go best player available here and that would be Hooker. Hooker and Adams, at this point, can be interchanged as the top safety and secondary prospect in this draft. They’re under new head coach Anthony Lynn, an offensive guy, but this pick will boost his defense, the obvious weakness of the 5-win Chargers.
8. Carolina Panthers - Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU - Give Cam some help. After a near Superbowl Run in 2016, the Panthers are selecting 8th in the 2017 draft. Fournette could easily be off the board by this point, but if he’s there, the Panthers would love to add the power-back. Fournette is special and can be plugged in from day one to take some pressure off Cam.
9. Cincinnati Bengals - Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama - The Bengals need a right tackle. In 2016, the offense struggled without Eifert and Green late in the season. Quarterback Andy Dalton was constantly under pressure, especially from the right side. This draft lacks offensive line talent, so being able to grab the top prospect at nine would be perfect for the Bengals.
10. Buffalo Bills - Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami - What do the Bills do at ten? Reach again for a quarterback? Why not? The Bills drove Tyrod Taylor out of town, which was a mistake, and now need to find a replacement. Future potential-starter Cardale Jones is not pro-ready yet, and the free agent market is highlighted by Brian Hoyer. Pat Mahomes is gaining a lot of speed moving forward and could make his way to the 4th QB prospect, but at this point, I see Kaaya as the superior prospect.
11. New Orleans Saints - Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford - A top five talent falls to 11 and the Saints could not be happier. The Saints are a mess defensively so adding a top defensive prospect, really at any position, makes since. Along with their many defensive issues, getting to the quarterback may be the largest of their problems. A pass-rusher of Thomas’s talent will help.
12. Cleveland Browns - Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech - Five quarters in the top 12. It’s a quarterback's league and these teams are desperate. The Browns spent their first pick, the first overall, on the draft’s best prospect. Now, they can add a quarterback. There’s a chance Mahomes is taken by the Bills at this point, especially since he is one of the quickest rising prospects in the draft, but if he’s there, why not by the Browns. I’ve heard comparisons of Mahomes to the likes of Derek Carr. I wouldn’t take that too hard too much, but I can see it a little. I still like Kaaya more at this point.
13. Arizona Cardinals - Reuben Foster, LB, Arizona - The Cardinals defense is fine really. A quarterback would be nice here, but I have all of the possible prospects off the board by now. They have a few soft spots in their defense and Foster is the premier inside linebacker in the draft and the inside position just so happens to be a weakness is the Cardinals’ defense.
14. Indianapolis Colts - Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State - The Colts need help everywhere, mainly offensive line, but as I started prior, there just isn’t top tier prospects in the draft. Andrew Luck gets murdered on a continual basis. Frank Gore has been playing decent for the Colts the past two seasons, but let's be honest, his time is done. Cook may be the best runningback in the entire draft and is arguably the best player available at 14, win-win for the Colts.
15. Philadelphia Eagles - Mike Williams, WR, Clemson - There’s no doubt the Eagles will be taking receiver with this pick. Their receivers last year were god awful and they need help for sophomore Carson Wentz. Eagles’ fans would lose it if Williams is available at 15. If he’s not, Corey Davis from Western Michigan could be the pick.
16. Baltimore Ravens - Derek Bennett, DE, Tennessee - The Ravens need some help across the board. Offensive line could use some help, but one of their biggest holes may be a pass rusher. Bennett is a primer prospect, playing four years for the Vols. Despite having the number-one ranked defense for a portion of the 2016 season, the Ravens still struggled to get to the quarterback.
17. Washington Redskins - Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan - Peppers stock has been falling a bit, but the Redskins won’t mind. The Redskins have enough on the offensive side to compete. They do need help on the defensive side of the ball, why not add the best athlete in the draft. Despite what Peppers did in college, he’s still a top tier safety and will fit just fine in the weak inside defense of the Redskins.
18. Tennessee Titans - Teez Tabor, CB, Florida - The Titans spent their first pick in the draft on Jamal Adams, a safety, and can now grab the top cornerback prospect at 18. What a one-two-punch that would be in terms of a rookie secondary combination. Tabor is the top corner prospect and would be very welcomed to the secondary of the Titans, who, are on the doorstep of winning the AFC South.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan - Davis is making his way up the boards as the second best receiving prospect in the draft. The Bucs would love to place Davis across from Mike Williams and give Jameis Winston that one-two-punch.
20. Denver Broncos - Ryan Ramcyzk, OT, Wisconsin - Ramcyzk will undergo hip surgery, affecting his draft stock. The Broncos are one of those tumbling teams. They had a decent 2016 campaign. They still have one of the best defenses in the league and could use some help keeping Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch upright.
21. Detroit Lions - Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State - The Lions need help across the defensive board. A cornerback to play across from Darius Slay could be an option here. However, the Lions have struggled on the defensive front after saying goodbye to the likes of Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Here’s the opportunity to add a pass-rushing partner with Ziggy Ansah.
22. Miami Dolphins - Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State - Those who saw the Dolphins get thrashed in the playoffs know that they are far from competing. Their defense is far from anything special so going best player available to help any aspect is a smart choice. This cornerback class is so talented and getting a top 3 guy this late would be a dream come true.
23. New York Giants - Tim Williams, OLB, Alabama - After splurging on their defense last year, the Giants forgot a play marker. Time Williams at 23 would be ideal. One of, if not the best, edge rushers from the linebacking position this draft has to offer. Imagine the Giants defense with the regular occurance of getting to the quarterback.
24. Oakland Raiders - Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt - The Raiders could easily go corner here but adding a linebacker that can cover the field as well as Cunningham can would be a treat. He’s not your dominate, power-house type of linebacker, but is athletic and can cover the field with the best of them.
25. Houston Texans - O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama - Give the man some help. The Texans, who snuck into the playoffs, need help all over the offensive side of the ball. Their quarterback situation is horrible despite paying one of them 12-million a season. They have playmakers on the outside in Hopkins and Fuller, give whoever is under center a 6-foot-6 athletic tight-end.
26. Seattle Seahawks - Garett Bolles, OT, Utah - It’s no secret that the Seahawks offensive line is in shambles. It’s easily their biggest weakness on the team and in spite of such a limited class in terms of offensive-lineman, they’re pretty much forced into taking one.
27. Kansas City Chiefs - Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama - I’ll never be sold on secondary players out of Alabama, but the Chiefs are looking to go best player available here and adding Humphrey to the likes of Peters and Nelson, it’ll allow them to have three talented young corners on the field when forced to defend against 3-and-4 receiver sets.
28. Dallas Cowboys - John Ross, WR, Washington - The Cowboys need a speedy-deep threat and Ross is that guy. Imagine that offense having a legitimate deep threat to go along with Zeke carrying the ball and Dez underneath, man that’s scary.
29. Pittsburgh Steelers - Takkarist McKinley, OLB, UCLA - Arguably the most explosive outside presence the draft has to offer. James Harrison is somehow still relevant at 38-years old. Time to think towards the future. Bring the dude in, convince Harrison to play one more season and let him learn. The Steelers have a thing for drafting linebackers.
30. Atlanta Falcons - Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan - The Falcons need to get to the quarterback. They’ve been trying with the likes of Lawson and Beasley who they selected recently, but they haven’t panned out to what they’ve expected. Charlton is a short-time starter at Michigan but has the tools to get to the quarterback at the next level.
31. Green Bay Packers - Sidney Jones, CB, Washington - There’s a reason not many people know Sidney Jones’ name, it’s because quarterbacks don’t want to throw his way. He’s by no means the corner with the highest upside in the draft, but he’s a great cover corner that is desperately needed on the Packers defense.
32. New England Patriots - Charles Harris, DE, Missouri - The Patriots always seem to be in that, best-pick available mode when it comes to drafting. They’ve shipped out the pass rushers of the past and the current ones are entering the last year of their contracts, and if you know the Patriots, you know they don’t want to pay anyone.
