Nope. The tradition and history came long before the multi-million dollar contracts did. I will say that the Yankees have played their resources right and marketed better than anyone....but even before all this sh*t, the Yankees had the largest fanbase.

you're so far from being spot on, and AE is right.

The Rays have been enormously successful in the last 3 years, with big names coming through their system that are talented "stars" in the league such as David Price, Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria, and still, in a potential division-clinching game, they had an empty stadium, as they did for most of the season.

The fans just don't want to pay the tickets, and the fanbase isn't that large either. They have been winning, and still dont fill seats. Teams like the Mets and Yankees and Red Sox do -- that is why they have the money they have.
