MLB Broadens Astros' Sign-Stealing Investigation to Other Teams and Seasons

On Thursday, Major League Baseball broadened the investigation - which originated as a probe into the 2017 Astros squad - to include Houston's 2019 club, as well as other teams.

Trevor Plouffe, a nine-year veteran who last played in 2018, explained that the Astros used a live feed to capture the opposing catcher's signals to the pitcher, then used technology to relay that information to the bullpen catcher, who would then indicate whether the pitch was a fastball or offspeed by putting his hands up on the fence or keeping them down. Plouffe's information came courtesy of big-league pitcher Carson Smith as well as an unnamed source.

Active right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers previously said that the 2017 team, which he was a part of, illegally used surveillance.

MLB has not yet made a ruling and no penalties have been filed against the Astros.

Current Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was a bench coach with the 2017 Astros, and New York Mets skipper Carlos Beltran, who played for Houston that season, have been identified as playing key roles in devising an electronic sign-stealing system, Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported. The league plans to interview both Cora and Beltran, along with Houston manager AJ Hinch.

The league's investigation is expected to include people from the Red Sox organization and the 2019 Astros, according to Passan.

i was gonna say this before i saw cora’s implication but still


who the fuck cares? It’s 2019 and baseball is DYING by its antiquated rules and it needs to vastly change its rule set to increase pace of play and make it a more enjoyable thing to watch (versus the snooze fest that it currently is)

Signs getting stolen? Ok, complicate your signs more. Problem solved

Yea it's one thing if the guy on 2nd is stealing signs, but using a live broadcast to do it is fucked.

If the allegations are true, this is really bad. The Astros will go down as a team that "cheated" their way to the top.
Teams need to tighten up their signals a lot. A possible solution is headsets for pitchers, catchers and managers to communicate through. MLB could assign proprietary frequencies to each team so that they could give signals during the game.
