AP - Mark McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.

"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

McGwire also used human growth hormone, a person close to McGwire said, speaking on condition of anonymity because McGwire didn't include that detail in his statement.

McGwire's decision to admit using steroids was prompted by his decision to become hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals,

if you lie for 10 years, and everyone knows you're lying, what's the value of finally telling the truth? about 1 hour ago from mobile web

He's not sorry, you can tell in his interview. And then he goes on making the excuse that it was to stay healthy. Screw that, you think Babe used them to stay healthy? I hate Mark McGuire with a passion, this is just icing on the cake.

The next question is if Mark McGwire deserves to be in the HOF after admitting his use.

Hell No. If you use steroids your a cheater. Cheaters don't deserve to be in something like the HOF, where theirs legends.

Steroids have been around forever - it's just that the 90s are being called the era due to so many at once.

HGH does not help you hit or pitch a ball. And, they weren't illegal or called cheating for a while, So, if you found a substance that's NOT banned that helps you somewhat, is that cheating or smart??

very touch subject, but I believe what McGwire did for baseball after the strike and no World Series deserves him a spot... period

Imagine if there wasn't a race for the record, would baseball ever regain its popularity?

pitchers and hitters that use roids are okay but if you cork your bat your a <Censored>? lol
Eh, yea that was a little excessive.

Ok, everyone that is mad at the "Steroid" era, listen up for a second.

Almost EVERYONE used them at that time, meaning the pitchers they hit off had more explosiveness, meaning it was even HARDER to still hit the ball, despite using steroids, which still requires talent.

It isn't cheating if most of the people around you are using them, its actually pretty smart.
HGH is also not cheating, because like Jarrod said, they were legal at the time.

Using HGH w/o being prescribed by doctor is illegal, period. Whether or not MLB technically considered HGH use against the rules or not is irrelevant. It's wrong, it's illegal, it's cheating the sport. It's unfair to assume that every player uses/used PED's too. Do I agree that a lot of player were using, hell yes, but its still a far cry from "everyone". Saying "everyone was using them" as a means of justification is like saying "a lot of people beat their wives, so why not join in?" What's right is right and if HGH use was so "okay" by any standards, we wouldn't be where we are today with the state of game.

I don't care if Mark McGwire single-handedly resurrected the sport of baseball in the United States. Its because of this douche and many, many others like him, the record books, the history, the highlights, will forever be under a microscope. I don't sympathize with Mark, I don't agree with him, and I don't buy into his bullsh.. excuses. Thousands of players tried to make it in this game and they never mustered up the ability to make it happen. Thousands of players before, during, and after McGwire just accepted their own fate...as opposed to sticking a needle in their ass. I grew up idolizing Ken Griffey Jr and as far as I am concerned, he was the most polarizing player of the era...and he was clean.
