There are worse places to live with that contract
They can start competing for the NLW in a few years probably. Dodgers are going nowhere. Good luck

I just wonder how long Machado actually stays in San Diego.

I mean, didn't the Padres, not so long ago, try the "buy some free agents and we're gonna win!" schtick...only to sell off those same pieces after they realized they just fundamentally weren't ready to compete with their home grown talent?

I understand the Padres have one of the better minor league systems, so maybe this time its different...maybe.
Or maybe not.
Potential, potential, potential... if a team got championships based on pure raw potential, then the Twins, Rays, Padres, Orioles, and Reds would be multiple recent World Series champs by now!!

Anyways...big, big contract for Money Machado....but he does have an opt out after year 5...and I suspect he ends up with the big market clubs at that point...unless San Diego proves me wrong and really does field a perennial contender.

They'll need Hosmer to bounce-back this year but the Padres offense could be pretty decent this year. Having Manny in the lineup will help.

Manny, Hosmer, Myers should be a good middle of the order.

I always saw his stance as wanting to be a SS was more about positioning himself as a FA so it's nice to see he'll be playing 3rd where he should be. Him and Tatis should be a fun left side.

I can't see building an offensive team without a lick of pitching when you play half your games in a pitchers park resulting in a lot of wins though. But they're young and the core is locked up so we'll see what pieces they can add in the future.

I give the Padres a B in the short term for this contract.  It should help them become competitive soon.  In the long run, I give this deal a D, as it may not allow them to keep some of their young studs.  It is hard for a team to have 2 mega-contracts at the same time.
