Personally, I'd rather the Knicks just sit back and let their team develop. Think about it, players can play a good ways into their 30's, here's their starting lineup:

Felton- 26
Fields- 22
Chandler- 23
Gallinari- 22
Amare- 28
Turiaf- 28
Mosgov- 24
Douglas- 24
Azubuike- 28
Curry- 28
Mason- 30
Rautins- 24
Walker- 23
Williams- 24

Then you even have a guy like Anthony Randolph who is a big "P" guy and he's the youngest player on the team at 21. That's a really young team, with most of it's contributors under 25. Let the develop, don't break up a core like that.

Don't get me wrong guys, I would so much prefer to just sit back and sign him as a FA -- but I think the Knicks have to at least explore these other options now and have something ready in the event that the Nuggets get close to dealing him to Jersey and all indications suddenly suggest that Melo is now more open to agreeing to a contract with New Jersey, especially if they find a way to add a nice piece along side Melo in NJ. So i think the Knicks are just trying to prepare themselves that way if suddenly the tide turns and it looks bad, they can at least go right to Denver and say "Hold on a second. Are you 100% SURE you're not wasting your time? Because we got 2 more teams here that are ready to sign the papers..."

They're not trying to trade for him right away -- I think they're just preparing themselves for the worst.

But I came across this just now -- very interesting:

The New York Knicks have reached out to Memphis about participating in a three-team deal that would send Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo to Denver and Carmelo Anthony to New York, according to league sources.

Emboldened by their belief that Anthony will refuse to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension with the New Jersey Nets, the Knicks inquired about Mayo independently of the Nuggets in an effort to enhance a trade package to Denver that would bring Anthony to New York.

But Denver has no interest in Mayo, sources close to the situation said Friday.

The Nets, Nuggets and Pistons still are in discussions on a trade that may involve more than 13 players and hope to have it wrapped up by next week, the Bergan (N.J.) Record reported.

The Knicks have tried to engage Denver in trade talks all season, but the Nuggets, unmoved by the players New York has to offer, have been unwilling to partake in significant discussions. Sources, however, say that is changing as the Nuggets themselves wonder whether Anthony is willing to go to New Jersey.

The Knicks understand they need to recruit another trade partner or two in order to put together a package Denver would be interested in, and that's their motivation for inquiring about Mayo. Knicks president Donnie Walsh denied to the New York Daily News Thursday night that the team was in talks with the Nuggets or the Grizzlies.

Although Mayo, who has one year, $5.6 million remaining on his contract after this season, does not have the leverage to stop a possible deal, sources say he would not be happy with a trade to Denver.

After nearly three years of rebuilding in Memphis, Mayo is looking to go to a winning situation, according to the sources. He understands that without Anthony, Denver would be starting over.

Mayo, however, would like to go to the Knicks. The Knicks' only interest in Mayo is to aid them in acquiring Anthony
.

I can understand why they wouldn't want him. I mean, they're looking to move Harris if they get him from the Nets -- they already got Lawson whose been improving a lot lately.

I wonder if the Knicks were able to find a 4th team to send a nice player that Denver would be interested in, and the Knicks somehow get both Mayo and Melo. Have Mayo as your 2 guard... I mean I doubt that they'd be able to nail both of them... but who the hell knows...

Also the issue with Randolph is he's sitting in D'Antoni's doghouse right now, which worries me. I'd love to see him get solid playing time and he's so young and has so much time to improve, but the lack of playing time and D'Antoni's refusal to give him solid playing time is just bad.

The Knicks have a contingent deal in place with the Wolves to send Anthony Randolph north in exchange for a 2011 first-round pick, according to the New York Post.
Team president Donnie Walsh is apparently hesitant to give up on Randolph even though the raw talent is not part of coach Mike D'Antoni's rotation. But if push comes to shove and they need that pick to get Carmelo Anthony, we suspect a deal would go down. Randolph would fit with the young talent in Minnesota, but would still come off the bench. He remains off the fantasy radar

The Knicks should do that deal, and just keep the pick. Its gonna be high. They could get a nice big with it, possibly Jones or Kanter.

As if this deal wasn't already dead, I'm pretty sure the Mayo suspension officially kills it.
