Pretty close. OKC will have his Bird rights and be able to offer him a 5th year on the contract with 7.5% raises while any other team (unless there's a sign and trade) can only offer him 4 years with 5% raises

I disagree that 1+1 is risky. What would have to happen to him for him to not be able to get a team to give him a max contract? I think it would have to be career ending, and even then he should just take out an insurance policy against that possibility. I just think he's too good for that to be a risk, like Wes Matthews got a near max (or max?) contract 6 months after tearing his achilles

i just dont like the idea of short team just to possibly leave or get more money. its a smart investment for them, but huge injury risk.

That 5th year is worth like $45M though. He could still get a deal in that 5th year, but whether or not it would be worth close to $45 M is a huge factor

An illness isn't really a realistic option to consider. Sure it could happen but the chances that he's now all of a sudden getting seriously/terminally ill seems way too low.
 
I think any structural damage to his body wouldn't matter. What's the worst thing that could happen to him? ACL, achilles? Even completely fucking up his bad foot isn't gonna make anyone not willing to give him a max contract. Even if he goes full on Greg Oden during that contract.
