The idle Toronto Raptors made news away from the court on Monday.

Second-year centre Jonas Valanciunas has been charged with impaired driving, having been stopped in Wasaga Beach, Ont., after allegedly being spotted with open beer bottles while travelling through a drive-thru.

Police say officers located the vehicle at a home, where they arrested Valanciunas alleging he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

Valanciunas is charged with having greater than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood and is to appear in court in nearby Collingwood on April 22.

"I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously," Valanciunas said in a statement released by the team. "I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them."

Earlier, the Raptors issued a statement, saying they are disappointed Valanciunas is in this situation.

We take this matter very seriously," said the NBA team, "as we have the highest expectations for all members of our organization. At this time we are continuing to gather information and we will comment further when appropriate.

Valanciunas, 21, is averaging 11 points and 8.6 rebounds in 76 games this season.

Nothing like getting drunk in Wasaga Beach.

So in Canada you can be arrested for impaired driving even if you aren't in the vehicle at the time?

While I'm all for catching impaired drivers, if the way the story is written is true, and that JV was in the home when they found his vehicle, that is complete bullshit.

Considering you aren't exempt from law/punishment simply because you weren't caught right away during the act itself, it can and does happen in the United States as well.

Someone observed him driving drunk, informed the police, they found him at his home later and was drunk. Perfectly legal on law enforcements part.

I've never heard of that happening where I live, and this place cracks down on impaired driving.

I mean, there's no real evidence. What a witness sees can be torn apart fairly easily. How exactly do you become a pro at spotting drunk drivers?

Unless there's visual evidence of the vehicle and who the driver of the vehicle is, there's no way that stands up in court.

Well. Clearly they got his plates, make, and model from whatever restaurant who could get the video with a time stamp. And with the blood alcohol level he would have been drunk at that time.

Slurred speech, open alcohol containers, car smells like booze, dilated pupils, everything a cop looks for? That's all evidence. He went through a drive through, not like some dude spotted him 500 feet away.

I thought Justin Verlander, before realizing this was in an NBA section.
