Why do the Hawks have to go out and spend all this money on free agents though? Ask the Pistons how their last spending spree worked out for them. You think the Mavs are taking a sigh of relief after dodging the massive bullet that is max deal for Deron Williams.

Yeah, I would agree there's only a trio of players I'm giving max deals to and none of these guys are hitting the market this offseason anyways. Let's stop pretending the only way to win in this league is to do what Miami did/the Lakers continue to do.

Outside of the Spurs, who are fucking brilliant.... it is the only way to win these days.

The Spurs will gas out once the going get tough in the playoffs. They were in the exact same spot last year except it's Tony Parker leading the way and not Manu.

In any event, the luxury taxes under the new CBA will kick in next year and once they do, you watch how fast this spending spree-style of playing NBA ball dies. It's not the same type of CBA but look at how spending has dramatically changed around MLB. Players are still overpaid with inflated contracts; however, teams like the Red Sox and Cubs are vaporizing their heavy salaries in favor of a younger, more cost-conscious approach. Once NBA teams, to include the wealthy, start seeing the hit in the wallet...they will start thinking otherwise.

I'm calling it right now, the Heat will go cheap once Lebron's contract expires and once the Kobe era ends in LA, I expect the Lakers will take some time away from buying All Stars & actually look to draft & develop their next winning era.

I think that's the difference. Tony is playing excellent right now. He can carry them.

I still think they should have gotten another big next to Duncan though.

My point was more that the Spurs haven't sucked since 1996... which is insane.

A lot of that has to do with Pop and how he's always been willing to adjust his system in order to better suit his players. Pop is the complete opposite of say...D'Antoni

Exactly. Using the draft/cap space to build rarely works. Yes, you have the Spurs and Thunder. But then look at the Bobcats, Raptors, Bucks, Wizards, Kings....

Now if your only worry is saving money and cap space then go for it... but if it's winning games then it's not going to work unless your management is brillant.

So far, I have no problems with what Danny Ferry has done in Atlanta. I think we'd all agree that team peaked a few years ago under Woodson and unfortunately their ownership doesn't give enough of a shit about basketball to spend big. They have to make best use of their funding and that means NOT maxing out older vets like JJ & Smooth. The Hawks are going to have to draft, find value in the FA market, and wheel & deal their way to the next playoff-contending era.

theyve never cared about needing to spend to win, thats why jj getting that huge max was kind of shocking.

Atlanta Spirit ownership group did care when they first purchased the team in 2004....but they have since stopped caring and cannot sell majority stake fast enough.

I heard a couple interesting things regarding this. Apparently it came down to 5 teams and Atlanta would have basically traded Josh Smith for an expiring and a first rounder. But teams value first rounders three to four times more than they did during the last CBA now.
