Lets stop beating around the bush, Theismann said early in the fourth quarter. Kirk Cousins has played much better at the quarterback position than Robert Griffin III has. Now, Robert is learning to work out of a pocket. He doesnt look as smooth or as comfortable throwing the football. I mean, your eyes will tell you everything you need to know.

Its going to be a decision that Jay Gruden is going to have to make, Theismann said. Right now, Robert Griffin III is his quarterback. Now, if there was a quarterback competition, it wouldnt be a competition. Kirk Cousins would be the man I believe he would have to go to, because of the efficiency with which he has run [the offense]. Now Kirk, like I said, is basically a drop-back quarterback. I see Andy Dalton in Cincinnati, I see Kirk Cousins that way.

As the game ended, Theismann came back to this topic.

I think theres going to be a lot of conversation after this football game regarding the quarterback position, he said.

I would agree, play-by-play man Kevin Harlan agreed.

You cant avoid it, Theismann went on. Your eyes dont lie to you. Robert has struggled in the limited opportunities that he has had. And Kirk Cousins has seized the opportunities that he has had when it comes to playing the position and understanding the offense.

And Joe, the numbers speak for themselves, Harlan said.

A mixture of painfully conservative playcalling and horrendous pass protection will make any quarterback look pedestrian.  He's certainly made some very stupid decisions, but aside from the one deep shot to Roberts against the Browns, and a shot to DJax down field last night, the passing game hasn't really been opened up at all with the 1's for RG3.  The two interceptions notwithstanding, I've liked what I've seen from Griffin.  He's going through two, three progressions consistently, his footwork looks much more consistent, and he's not erratic with the football.  He's still completing 65% of his passes this preseason.  Two poor decisions on his two interceptions, but shit happens.  The one against Cleveland should have been avoided, but he did have a defender in his chest as he was throwing that ball.

I'd wait until we see how the playbook opens up once the regular season rolls around.  I refuse to believe that this is how Gruden is going to handle Griffin.  We need to see some moving pockets, some bootlegs, maybe sprinkle in some read-option.  I don't understand why you want to take away what makes Griffin so dangerous.  I still believe Griffin can be a productive quarterback from the pocket, but it's absurd to use him in that role exclusively and take away the skillset that got him to where he is.

You start Cousins in this offense, and at maximum potential, he'll give you about what Griffin gave you last year on a gimp leg and no confidence.

Well that's just inaccurate.

Three years into his career and Griffin still has trouble taking a three step drop and getting the ball out. That's not a good sign. He's going to put up some stats because he has a killer deep ball and some great targets, but he doesn't have it between his ears, where it's most important. He's indecisive, which may be the worst thing you can be as a QB, that's when the INTs happen.

I don't think its inaccurate at all. Cousins has never had a bad preseason game in his career, yet look at his performance in his regular season starts. Granted, he was in a shitty situation, but it was the same shitty situation Griffin was in, and Griffin still outplayed him.

Cousins has looked better because he's a better fit for what Gruden has been trying to do this preseason... Whatever that happens to be.

RG3, at this point in time, is the single most overrated athlete in all of sports. Jay Gruden would be wise to at least consider starting Kirk Cousins. I say that facetiously, but he needs to throw it out there, even if he has no intention of playing Kirk over Robert. He needs to shake Robert's ego. The only way you get Griffin to excel in this league is if you bring him down to Earth and let him know that he isn't calling the shots. I see so much DoNovan McNabb in him from the ego standpoint that it's not even funny. McNabb lucked into the perfect system when he might not have succeeded anywhere else. Griffin didn't. I'm optimistic for his future because I see necessary improvements in things like footwork and mechanics, which is something McNabb refused to improve and ultimately was the downfall of his later career when he could have been chasing championships. Griffin clearly isn't as egotistical as McNabb, but he still needs to have both feet on the ground.
