The Columbus Blue Jackets added free agent James Wisniewski with a big contract this summer, and made sure Wednesday that another key member of the defense corps will be around for a long time as well.

General manager Scott Howson announced the Blue Jackets signed defenseman Fedor Tyutin to a six-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reported the deal is worth $27 million, so the salary cap hit will be $4.5 million per season.
Tyutin, who will make $3.425 million in 2011-12, would have been an unrestricted free agent this coming July.

"Pleased to announce 6 year extension for Fedor Tyutin," Howson wrote Wednesday on Twitter. "Fedor has been our top dman since we traded for him. He signed the deal this morning."

The 28-year-old joined Columbus in July 2008 in a trade from the New York Rangers for Nikolay Zherdev and Dan Fritsche. Tyutin has 22 goals and 93 points in three seasons with the Blue Jackets.

His average ice time was between 20:02 and 20:33 during parts of four seasons with the Rangers, but Tyutin has played at least 22:42 per game each campaign with Columbus.

Tyutin has also represented Russia in the past two Olympics, collecting 4 assists in 17 games. A second-round pick by the Rangers in the 2001 Entry Draft, Tyutin has played at least 80 games in each of the past four NHL seasons.

Portzline also reported Tyutin has a no-trade clause for the first three years of the deal and a modified NTC in the final three.

I rarely see the Jackets in action so don't really know if this guy is good or not .. but seems a bit overpaid
