Every other team in the league with more than 2 syllables has some sort of short form. Blazers, Wolves, Cavs, Mavs, ..

Pelicans are such awkward birds. They move in to my part of the country every summer because a lot of our lakes have spillways and they nab fish out of them. They're gigantic, for one thing. Out on the lake they look like Disney rides.

A Pelicans sports team was around in New Orleans than the Saints, Hornets, Voodoo, Brass, Zephyrs, etc. People called them the Pels. Some people would even argue that Pelicans has more historic value than the Saints. I love it.
