I understand this may have been a issue for many Native Americans for many years, but why after decades of Washington having the name, is this finally getting so much publicity?  Thats what I don't get.

Because it involves a minority group. More specifically a minority group that really has no government representation and isn't really integrated with most communities.

That's stupid.  Redskin potatoes aren't used for baked potatoes.

Redskin potatoes are the worst potatoes. I'd much rather use yellow yukon gold potatoes for anything redskins would be used for.

Just because it was OK then doesn't mean it is OK now. 
 
And it gets more attention now because of the media.
