Katie Strang/ESPN.com - Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov is out indefinitely with a groin injury.

Nabokov left New York's 4-3 win over Montreal on Thursday 7:55 into the first period after suffering the injury.

The 36-year-old made a save with his right pad on Montreal's Yannick Weber and went down immediately afterward in obvious pain.

Backup Rick DiPietro came in to replace Nabokov, making 24 saves in relief to record his second win of the season.

I don't really think that this will hurt the Isles at goaltending. I think they were just holding onto Nabokov for trade bait. So, having him injured really only makes it an inconvenience since no one will want him until he's back.

New York has been rolling three goalies all year long - DiPietro, Nabs, and Montoya. But with Montoya listed as day-to-day, this just means that DiPietro will be getting most of the work load.

Maybe it will be good for DiPietro to get his time to play, seeing as he's been on of the biggest busts in recent NHL history due to his own injury problems.

He won't affect their goalie situation that much but he could have been a good trading piece for another team.
