Espinoza was in single-A and we are about to sign Groome to replace him

We need starting pitching. I like this deal

I do think he's due for some serious regression, but he is better than the shit Boston has been throwing out there.

Getting flashbacks to the Tigers years where Dombrowski traded literally everyone in the farm system. Luckily the Red Sox system is a lot deeper than Detroit's ever was.

He has no ties to any of these prospects and he knows how to pull off blockbusters.

I expect a lot of these guys to move.

I think it's a good deal for both teams. Pomeranz still has 2.5 years of control left. It's not like Espinoza is close to being MLB ready.

one will be
But at least it'll be in a deal involving a pretty good major leaguer

I like the deal too.

While Pomeranz has never really pitched an entire season, nonetheless his three seasons away from Colorado total 250 IP and an ERA under 3 (FIP at about 3.4 during those same years with Oakland and San Diego). He averages about a strikeout per inning, but he walks a lot of batters (2.8 K/BB).

Espinoza's sample size is too small to really know where he'll fit into an MLB rotation. He was really good to start the season but his ERA at Single-A is above 4.00. Boston is close to signing Groome and it also helps Kopech hit triple digits on the radar the other night. I'd call it a good trade for Boston but I'm not sure about another lefty SP coming into a compact park.

Cubs were supposedly in a 3 way deal here that would have sent Pomeranz to the Cubs with them flipping him to another team for another starter with even more control. Rumor has it that it was Marcus Stroman

Not a chance in hell the Jays would trade Stroman when his value is at its lowest

His first start for the Sawx was a dud. They paid a pretty good price for him, they need to hope it was just jitters.

He had a really long wait in between the 3rd and 4th innings, and it killed his rhythm

Or it was the second time through the lineup and they adjusted

they gave that excuse on the broadcast. In any case, he has to be able to not allow 7 straight batters to reach base after the long wait. Time will tell with this deal. He's not that bad, but he also might not be as good outside of PetCo as Red Sox fans are hoping. His lack of a track record is concerning.
