The Red Sox may be looking to unload some of their depth at various positions before the start of the 2011 regular season schedule.

According to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, the Sawx have let other major league teams know that starters Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefieldare available via trade and that outfielders Mike Cameron and Darnell McDonald can also be had for the right price.

The Red Sox are looking to add a young catcher in case backup Jason Varitek breaks down and they would also like left-handed relief help in the event that Dennys Reyes doesn’t pan out.

Now it’s all about finding the right trading partner.

Matsuzaka isn’t going to be very attractive to other clubs given the 4.79 ERA that he registered in the second half of the 2010 season and the 11.42 ERA that he’s posted across three Grapefruit League starts this spring. On top of all that, he is owed $20 million over the next two seasons.

Wakefield isn’t going to be easy to move either because of his old age and stated intentions to retire soon, and Cameron and McDonald would only start in the outfield on a handful of non-contending clubs.

The four veterans may intrigue some GMs around the big leagues, but any trade is going to be difficult. Also, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has already vehemently denied Edes’ report, labeling it “false.”

There is no way that Dice-K is going to be moved, there is no demand for him. He has really been a bust if you look at his performance since joining the Red Sox. I think if anyone can possibly be traded it would be Tim Wakefield to a contending team trying to make a run.

I don't think you can call someone who was 2nd in Cy Young Voting a bust....

but he wont be moved.

teams will only trade for him if he's really good. and if he's really good, the sox wont trade him

He was actually 4th and that was 2 years ago. He hasn't pitched all that well since and you're kidding yourself if you think the Sox wouldn't jump at the chance to trade him if he's pitching well.

And you don't want to call him a bust? Fine, he isn't. He's damn sure a miscalculated investment. $50MM just to talk to him and another $100MM for his contract.

You paid $50M just to be able to talk to him, then gave him a 9 digit contract, he's given you one luck-filled season, two mediocre ones (one of which was injury-filled), and an injury-filled god awful season. Bust written all over him

He's impossible to watch. The only way that he's moving is if the Sox eat most all of his salary or take a POS off another team's roster.
