Update: 4:43 pm:

This afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys signed QB Tony Romo to a 6 year deal worth $108M. More details to come.

Original Post:

Well, now we know why the Cowboys have been so interested in trying to extend the contract of quarterback Tony Romo.

Apart from the importance of reducing his $16.8 million cap number for 2013, Romo’s contract was crafted in a way that prevents the Cowboys from applying the franchise tag in 2014.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Romo’s contract extends beyond 2013 by three years.  (According to NFLPA records, it definitely does.)  Thus, Romo will become a free agent in 2014 not by the expiration of the deal, but by the voiding of the final three years.

And while the deal apparently doesn’t include a no-tag provision, Rapoport explains that the deal will void after the deadline passes for using the franchise tag.

Donovan McNabb does not approve of Tony Romo’s new contract
The news that the Cowboys and quarterback Tony Romo have agreed to a six-year contract extension was met with an interesting reaction from one of Romo’s former NFC East counterparts.

Donovan McNabb, who quarterbacked teams that faced Romo’s Cowboys several times with the Eagles (and once with the Redskins), took to Twitter to say that he doesn’t think Romo deserves the kind of money he got, which is reportedly a contract that has six additional years, a total value of $108 million in new money, and $55 million guaranteed.

“Wow really, with one playoff win,” McNabb wrote. “You got to be kidding me.”

McNabb is right that Romo has been the starter for just one playoff win for the Cowboys — a record that falls far short of what the Eagles did with McNabb at the helm.

McNabb started 16 playoff games for the Eagles, who went 9-7 in those games.

But McNabb of all people should also know that these contracts aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be: In 2010, McNabb signed what his agent called a five-year contract extension worth $78 million, with about $40 million guaranteed, with the Redskins. As it turned out, McNabb saw only a small fraction of that alleged $40 million guaranteed: He was benched less than a month after signing that contract, he accepted a massive pay cut just eight months later as part of his trade to the Vikings, and he was out of the NFL by the end of the following season.

So Romo may not make all the money he’s allegedly guaranteed to make on this new contract. But it’s certainly safe to say he’ll make more money than McNabb made on that last Redskins contract.

Worst contract of the offseason in my opinion. He has won nothing, he is a very good quarterback, but he makes way too many costly mistakes during pivotal times in games. I mean its not like the Cowboys have another option at QB, but they always overpay their good players.

Bad contract for an overrated QB
would you not say that he's underrated considering that most everybody thinks he's terrible? Those of us who watch most Cowboys games know how good he is, and if this is what it takes to lock him up and lower his cap number, I'm happy. If he wins a Super Bowl, he'll go down as the best QB in Cowboys history, so I'm rooting for him.

People hate Tony Romo so much, to the extent that you'd think he's a bad person when he's well-known for doing absolutely random things among the public for the less fortunate. Taking homeless folks into movies with him, buying them meals, stopping and help people change tires. He's just a good fucking dude, and I wish people would look past the star on his helmet if they're aware of that.

He needs at least 2 SB wins to be even in the same CONVERSATION with Staubach. Probably 3

im not a big fan of the dude on a football level but you cant definitively say that he wont win a superbowl or have success...lol

especially on a team that tends to have a good deal of surrounding talent.

and that team with good talent that never wins. so when they dont win you have to blame the coach or the most important player on the field.

i never said its not his fault. it most definitely is.

and im not saying that they are definitely going to win a super bowl or even do so much as make the playoffs ever again, but when a team has that much talent on paper they're not going to be written off so easily as saying "nope, theyre not gonna win a super bowl at all, no chance"

What talent is there really?

Very bad offensive line: Tyron is good but he's the only one really. Dallas needs some OL help
They have a good trio at receivers, but Romo's poor decision making and the poor OL won't help the passing game
Murray can't stay healthy

Ware won't be nearly as effective at DE. Which means Spencer, whose stats last year were largely contributed to the pressure Ware brought, will be nullified as well

Don't have a run stopping NT

Sean Lee is a good LB, others aren't really

Significant needs at safety

Too many question marks for the #3-4 team in he NFC East

lol you took what i said as saying that they were going to be good. i don't ever expect them to do well. try watching their games as a fan and rooting for a team that can't effectively run a play and yet has people saying theyre SB contenders every season. all I meant is that you can't write them off 100% any given year, although the same can be said for literally every single team in the league. they probably have enough talent on paper to do well, as many holes as they have, but they play like shit.
