Colts Release Marvin Harrison

The Indianapolis Colts agreed to release Marvin Harrision, the NFL's No. 2 all-time receiver, in a salary-cap move Monday, said Harrison's agent, Tom Condon.

Harrison turns 37 in August and is coming off the least productive non-injury plagued season of his 13-year NFL career. Cutting Harrison could save the Colts about $6 million on next season's salary cap.

Condon said he expects the Colts to make the announcement that Harrison has been released on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Associated Press left a telephone message seeking comment from Colts spokesman Craig Kelley.

Colts president Bill Polian told reporters Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team was trying to rework Harrison's deal to lower the wide receiver's salary-cap number from approximately $13.4 million, the highest number of any wideout in the NFL.

But after the two sides couldn't agree on a restructured contract, Harrison asked the Colts to release him, a league source told NFL Network's Adam Schefter on Sunday.

Harrison has been one of the Colts' most identifiable players since their move to Indianapolis. He ranks No. 2 in the NFL in career receptions (1,102) and holds all of the franchise's major career and season receiving records.

Since being drafted by the Colts in 1996, Harrison has been a model of consistency. He has made eight Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl ring. His 14,580 receiving yards rank fourth on the NFL's career list, and he's fifth all time with 128 touchdown catches. Harrison and quarterback Peyton Manning also teamed to produce the most proficient passing tandem in league history.

But Manning has increasingly thrown more passes to Reggie Wayne, who has made the last three Pro Bowls, while Anthony Gonzalez, Indy's first-round draft pick in 2007, has made a push for more playing time.

well, Marvin wouldn't take a paycut so they could extend others' contracts, so this was inevitable

yeah he was expecting money that he didn't really deserve after last season
not to say he's fully declining yet but he's no longer in his prime

I understand the situation from both sides, but I really would have liked to see him finish his career in Indy

hes far out of his prime, hes too old, he doesnt have the tools to make the money he was expected.

He shoulda taken a pay cut.
Idk, maybe he'll consider a retirement. I hate watching players just keep on going as they deteriorate, especially at this position.

I can honestly see Detroit going after him, to partner him up with Calvin. Since we don't have anyone to throw it to besides him, unless we get one via draft.
