Casey would have been fired after first round loss

Having taken the last two games to even their series against the heavily favored Cleveland Cavaliers, faith has been restored in the city of Toronto.

But a month ago, when the Raptors got off to a slow start against the Indiana Pacers in the first round, trouble loomed for longtime head coach Dwane Casey.

Had the Raptors lost to the seventh-seeded Pacers, Casey would have lost his job, ESPN's Zach Lowe reports.

Fortunately for Casey, his Raptors eventually squeezed past the Pacers in a tightly contested seven-game series, before taking yet another seven-game set from the Miami Heat. That's marked a series of first-time successes for a Raptors franchise that had become known for untimely postseason meltdowns.

Winning a seven-game series, advancing past the second round, and taking two games in the conference finals - Casey has led the Raptors into rarefied air.

There's also the matter of Casey's regular-season success. Since taking over a 23-win club in 2011-12, the Raptors have improved their win percentage in every season under his watch.

This year, Toronto set a franchise high with 56 wins, good for fourth-best in the NBA. And with the Raptors among the final four teams remaining in championship contention, they've also managed to exorcise their playoff demons. Casey has surpassed expectations, and in doing so, he's more than just saved his job - he might even have earned a raise.

Casey has a team option to return for 2016-17 for $3.5 million. He's the NBA's fourth-longest tenured coach after Gregg Popovich, Rick Carlisle, and Erik Spoelstra.

It's pretty weird that Spo is the third longest tenured coach in the league.  NBA coaches have a very short life span.

Definitely understand them being anxious and wanting to move on if he couldn't get them past the Pacers, especially ahead of a big postseason, but yeah I think he's a good coach and I think clearly has shown he's the guy to lead this team. They also did a great job responding to the Cavs winning the first two big

I forgot Carlisle has been with Dallas just as long. I guess he came right after Avery Johnson.

It really is an ungrateful job. Always the first one get pointed at when things are shitty. And the first one to go because it's way easier than to trade players.
I wonder how many millions of dollars have been payed out to inactive coaches that have been fired.

Before the playoffs Masai Ujiri stated that Casey wouldn't be fired no matter what happened in the playoffs. Maybe it was just to take some pressure off him or what. But this is interesting. I think if they had, say, been swept by the Pacers, he would have been done.

It's also much easier for a GM to say "why can't you win with what I gave you, someone else will" or blame them for development issues, than to take fault for the moves that didn't work out

It's very easy to change a coach and hope it works than try to change the dynamic of your team through trades.

I hate situations like this. It's like playing with fire. I know they are in the ECF's, but it's almost like the writing is on the wall with Casey.

Dwane Casey is great between games. His biggest fault is in-game management of the offense.

It doesn't matter who their coach is. The raptors are never winning a championship. Well at least with lebron in the east they wont
