Buccaneers fire Super Bowl-winning head coach Gruden

NFL.com Wire Reports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired coach Jon Gruden on Friday, as was first reported by NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
Jon Gruden
Tenure with Bucs
Years: 7
Overall mark: 60-57
Playoffs: 3-2
Super Bowl wins: 1

General manager Bruce Allen was also dismissed. After the team collapsed following a 9-3 start and failed to make the playoffs, the organization decided to go in a different direction.

"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," said Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer. "However, after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."

The Buccaneers were tied for first place in the NFC South heading into December, but finished with losses to Carolina and Atlanta on the road and San Diego and Oakland at home, where they had been 6-0. One more win would have landed a NFC wild-card berth.

The 9-7 record this season left Tampa out of the playoffs for the fourth time in six years.

Gruden went 60-57 in seven seasons as head coach of the Buccaneers, including the playoffs. He was the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl when he led Tampa Bay to a 48-21 win over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, his first season with the team.

Gruden was Tampa Bay's coach for seven years before being dismissed. Allen was general manager for the last five seasons.

Gruden's firing means that there will be 10 new head coaches next season, the most since the 2005-06 season.
WOW, WHATTTTT?????

Maybe he'll become Jets #1 guy.

Then Spags comes to the Chiefs :)

On the Tampa Bay Buccaneers forum they are all happy. I cannot believe it. I'd be happy with a coach like Gruden.

Lions need Gruden and a new GM.
What a dumbass, we only needed to wait less then 24 hours.
Damn, we jumped the gun on someone who won't do anything for us.. ANYTHING, and a 4-6 win season don't cut it.
I know we need time but we need waht Kraig said.
Oh well, I got the Ravens to root for and the packers next season along with my Lions :(

Couldn`t you have done this sooner Bucs?? I mean seriously, that`s not even cool. If we managed to get him on our staff though, that would be cool, but I doubt it. He`s a HC, and needs a HC job. than again, they could move Schwartz to DC, and get Gruden. Ok, now i`m just dreaming here, but damnit Bucs, damnit.

That's the thing with Schwartz. He has proved to be a good defensive coach for the titans BUT as we've seen with Rod defensive coaches don't always end up being great head coaches. Jon Gruden has what it takes and the experience and leadership but it's a bit too late for the Detroit Lions now. I don't think many people were aware of this and that it was going to happen. Jon Gruden won't stay jobless very long.

I saw this coming...but not until after the 09 season. Love Gruden, great Head Coach but needs to change some of his ways. His preference in QB is the first issue that comes to mind. Just b/c you were successful with Rich Gannon & then won a SB with Brad Johnson doesn't give you the right to shed a guy like Chris Simms in favor of a Jeff Garcia or Brian Griese.

First Monty Kiffin, now Gruden...rebuild is now the theme in Tampa.

Enter: Mike Shannahan.

I hope they sign Shannahan, or at least someone does. He is too good of a coach to be out on the market, let alone as long as he has been.
