BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to a four-year contract extension. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 28-year-old Seidenberg is a veteran of 374 regular season NHL games and has compiled 18 goals, 98 assists and 116 points in his seven NHL seasons. This season marked Seidenberg’s first with the Bruins, as he was traded from Florida to Boston with Matt Bartkowski at this year’s trade deadline (March 3, 2010), for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2010 second round pick. Boston is the fifth NHL team Seidenberg has suited up for, along with Philadelphia, Phoenix, Carolina and Florida. He has appeared in 19 postseason games during his career with Philadelphia and Carolina and registered 1-5=6 totals in those playoff contests.

He skated in 17 games this year with the Black & Gold and tallied 2 goals, 7 assists and 9 points. For the season with Boston and Florida, Seidenberg set career highs in games played (79), assists (28) and points (32), in addition to potting four goals. He also led the NHL in blocked shots with 215.

Seidenberg missed the final four games of the regular season and the entire playoffs after sustaining a lacerated tendon in his forearm during the Bruins/Maple Leafs game on April 3. He had surgery to repair the tendon on April 6 and the recovery time was eight weeks.

Seidenberg played for Team Germany at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and has been a teammate of Marco Sturm on the German squad in four international tournaments (2001 Worlds, 2002 Olympics, 2008 Worlds, 2010 Olympics).

The 6’1”, 210-pound native of Schwenningen, Germany was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forward Shawn Thornton to a two-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 32-year-old Thornton is a veteran of 290 regular season NHL games and has compiled 15 goals, 25 assists and 496 penalty minutes in his seven NHL seasons. This season marked Thornton’s third with the Bruins, after signing a three-year contract with Boston as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2007. Thornton joined the Bruins after a one year stint with the Anaheim Ducks, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2006-07.

Last year, he played in 74 regular season games for Boston and set career highs in assists (9) and penalty minutes (141), in addition to scoring one goal. His 21 fighting majors were tops on the team and ranked tied for the fifth most overall in the NHL. He skated in 12 of the team’s 13 playoff games in 2010, and has played in a total of 44 postseason contests in his NHL career.

In his three seasons with the Bruins, Thornton appeared in 211 games and tallied 11 goals, 17 assists, 28 points and 338 penalty minutes in the regular season and played 29 games with one goal and 16 penalty minutes in the playoffs.

The 6’2”, 217-pound native of Oshawa, Ontario was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh round (190th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded by the Leafs to the Chicago Blackhawks for Marty Wilford on September 30, 2001 and skated in 31 games with Chicago over three seasons. He then signed with the Ducks as a free agent on July 12, 2006.
Happened a couple days ago but no thread. Both good signings for the B's. Thornton a great character guy and Seidenberg played really after the trade here.
