Braves' New Stadium is Hosing Cobb County

Neil deMause of Field of Schemes passes along the news that Cobb County, Georgia, which committed $400 million to build the Atlanta Braves new ballpark, cannot fulfill $40 million in obligations it undertook to build public parks.
 
As deMause notes, it’s not a matter of just foregoing some theoretical public park expenditures due to the new priority of an MLB ballpark. Rather, the county redirected money earmarked — and approved by voters — for public parks to the Braves project, which was never placed before voters. The county says it will now have to raise taxes to fulfill the public park obligation.
 
Most public ballpark projects are an exercise in the debasement of governmental purpose in the name of corporate greed. This one is on the more extreme end of the spectrum in just about every way.

Publicly owned stadiums have gotten way out of hand. They need to be paid by the owners, or at the very least there needs to be a time frame in place. The Cubs have a 100+ year old stadium being renovated out of the owners pocket. If Wrigley can be renovated, any stadium can be renovated. Turner Field isn't even bad, it's not like Tropicana or the Coliseum

The stadium will work out in the long run. The issue with their current field isn't the facility as much as it is the location. Most of the Braves' regional support comes from the the northern part of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and the Carolina's. Attending will go up because of how much easier it is to navigate Smyma, GA as opposed to Atlanta.
 
The Braves are also loading up for the future. The team will soon reclaim the NL East throne with GA-boy Dansby leading the way.

Well yeah, it would need to become a law of some sorts. In a time some states cannot afford education, they don't need to be rebuilding 20 year old stadiums

In all fairness, Cobb County, GA wanted the new stadium deal. They shot themselves in the foot but as I've said, it'll work out for them in the long run. As long as the Braves build another winning era of baseball, the team will increase the tourism and cash-flow in the area.

Yeah I guess I haven't followed the background story to this. I am curious to see Turner Field though. As of now I plan to catch a game there on my way moving to Florida. It looks nice on TV so will be interesting to see it in person
