I like both signings for the present but not sure if on a long term base it would be good or not, specially for Hanley

The Hanley signing is fine assuming healthy (which you can't assume with him)

Anyway you spin it, the Sandoval signing isn't though

If we win a World Series, then I'm fine with the deals

But we better win though.

Sandoval's rank among 3rd basemen last year:

WAR: 11th
OBP: 16th
AVG: 9th
HR: 7th
SLG: 12th

2013:
WAR: 14th
OBP: 8th
AVG: 8th
HR: 13th
SLG: 10th

He grades out as an average to above average defender metric wise, and with his body type you're almost certainly going to see a decline in his defensive abilities sooner rather than later.

Even if the Red Sox win a world series, that doesn't mean he's worth a massive overpay.

You said you're fine with the deal if the Red Sox win. I'm arguing the money could have been used to make the team as good as possible

in the past 3 years, it sure has not worked out for the rich al east teams

jays went all in, trading their top prospects for vets with huge contracts

yanks with the mccann, carlos and ells signing.

but just as long as the Sox add some pitching, they'll be fine imo.
