A number of teams put in posting bids for Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish before Wednesday's deadline, but the New York Post reports that it is believes that the Toronto Blue Jays put in the highest number in order to gain negotiating rights for the 6-5 25-year-old who is 93-38 with a 1.99 ERA lifetime in Japan.
Darvish's current team, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, don't have to decide till Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern whether to take the bid presented to them or not, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to believe they won't opt to take the money and send Darvish to North America, particularly when the amount is said to be "above $40 million and possibly close to $50 million," according to the Post.
The Chicago Cubs are believed to also have "made a large bid on the right-handed pitcher but a number hasn't been attached to their bid," the Post notes.
The New York Yankees also bid and the Texas Rangers are believed to have done so as well, according to the Post.
After Darvish learns which team has the rights to negotiate with him, the paper opines that he'll be seeking a deal for around $75 million over five years.
