The Bills didn’t wait long to pull the rip-cord on the parachute that is Kyle Orton.

Bills coach Doug Marrone announced today that he was benching second-year starter E.J. Manuel, and making Orton his starting quarterback.

“We can’t keep going in the direction that we’re going,” Marrone said.

The Bills are 2-2, but Manuel has struggled, throwing two picks and completing fewer than half his passes in yesterday’s loss to the Texans.

It’s an interesting play for a coach and a front office that will be on notice with new ownership coming in soon.

Marrone was upset with the addition of Orton, thinking it undermined last year’s first-round pick.

So going with him now either points to the fact it wasn’t his call, or he’s lost confidence in Manuel too.

What a stupid pick that was. Seems like everyone knew that was a bad pick except the Bills.

The proof in the pudding that EJ Manuel was a bad pick?

Bad in college, bad in the NFL. Rarely, rarely works out.

Nevertheless, Manuel's potential ceiling is way higher than what Kyle Orton is. This is still a stupid move. Manuel shows flashes of potential. Orton is mediocrity.

At least ej didn't toss a ton of picks.

5 tds, 3 picks. I've seen worse stats.

Though I haven't seen him play much this year so maybe the stats don't tell the whole story

They're both bad. Whatever edge one has over the other is marginal at best.

EJ Manuel is a 5th round talent who got taken in the 1st. So far he's played to his talent level. This isn't the egregious move some of you are making it out to be.

EJ deserves to be benched. Those of you saying this is a dumb move, must not be watching the Bills games. He misses wide open receivers in the middle of the field repeatedly. He's terrible. He plays scared. He doesn't have it. Waste of a first rounder. If I'm a Browns fan, I'm jumping for joy. You're welcome for the top 10 pick.

Over the Bills’ past two losses, Manuel completed only 16-of-48 attempts (9-of-27 against Houston) to receivers for 180 yards. That’s a completion percentage of 33.3-percent, and a yards per attempt average of 3.75 — which includes the 80-yard touchdown pass from Sunday
