Bengals owner Mike Brown finally acknowledged Tuesday that Carson Palmer has retired from football.
Palmer would be willing to play if the Bengals traded him, but Brown reiterated that won't happen. "Carson signed a contract, he made a commitment," said Brown. "He gave us his word. ... We expected him to perform here. If he is going to walk away from his commitment we aren’t going to reward him for doing it." It's nice to see Brown finally concede the obvious, but it doesn't mean he's any less stubborn. It's a shame for a player with 2-3 halfway decent seasons left.

Kind of shocked Palmer actually went with his word and retired.

He's set for life. Why play in a situation you don't want to be in if they wont trade you?

He didn't want to play there last season either right, he made 10M last season. What did he say he has saved up? Something like 80M? So why is he suddenly set for life when he has 80M instead of 70M?

Maybe now he's just fed up and never wants to play for the Bengals now.

They aren't really doing anything and it's not a surprise he went through with his word he knows he's set and he finally got tired of Cincy. Leave that man alone.

The Bengals are so stupid, you get something for him no matter what. Horribly run franchise, if not for Palmer they dont make the playoffs for the past 20 years.

i woulda just traded him for a young guy and a draft pick or something..hes ok but i dont think hes gonna take them deep into the playoffs or even into the playoffs.. might as well get something out of it..instead the dude stays stubborn and palmer retires and they get nothing.

While it would be nice to get something, I have to agree with Mike Brown. Make sure you take note of this because I never agree with Mike Brown. It sets a bad precedent when you let a player demand what you do, Carson signed a contract through 2014, he didn't have to accept it, he knew all about the franchise at that point in time as well. Mike Brown is holing him accountable for that contract, he agreed to it. If Mike Brown lets Carson get his way, other players would do the same thing thinking they would be able to get away with it as well. Chad has demanded a trade for years now and it hasn't happened, I can't imagine what Chad would say had the Bengals traded Palmer. Carson Palmer was not helping the team win games and he was getting overpaid by a LOT, so at least that will free up 11 million there for 2011. As much as it pains me to say this, I support Mike Brown's decision.

Like another Bengals fan said....

It all comes down to philosophy. I don't disagree with making your team better but sometimes a guy has to stick to what he believes. Carson Palmer was given the keys to the city. He was given the richest contract in Bengals History and was always supported by this pathetic organization. It isn't like MB treated him like crap and now he wants out. Sometimes a man must take a stance in order to make a point. We have all been in a situation where you can attain a tangible good but have to sacrifice your own principles and what you truly believe. I for one am a man of principle and i would not sacrifice that core belief in me under any circumstances. If Mike Brown doesn't want to reward a player for completely quitting on the team, I cannot disagree with him.

But, I'm ready to quit talking about it and move on with Dalton or whoever the starting QB may be. I definitely thank Carson for some of the good things he has done for us over the years and hopefully he enjoys his retirement and maybe some day, he'll be playing again, who knows.

I just don't understand why the Bengals won't just trade him.. Why do they want someone on there team who doesn't want to be there?

But if Mike Brown is telling Carson Palmer to 'honor' his contract, then how can he justify his team cutting any player on his team ever again? He wouldn't be 'honoring' their contract..

Because it's Mike Brown... Anyone that knows him knows that he makes players go by the contract, generally if a player is under contract, he will not release/trade them until it's up. I will be curious to see what they do with Chad because he's under contract for another year and they keep saying "he's under contract." That's all they will say about it.
