On Monday mornings Wrestling Observer radio, Dave Meltzer had some more information on Cody Rhodes WWE departure. He noted that Cody wanted to drop the Stardust character to honor his father and the teasers on social media were supposed to lead to that. At the time, we thought that it was just Cody messing with fans on social media but he absolutely wanted to drop the gimmick but Vince McMahon made the call to keep him as Stardust. The plan was for him to drop the Stardust gimmick right after WrestleMania. That explains why he was egging the fans to chant Cody at him during matches. A

The company is not going to make it easy for him to work elsewhere until contract runs out. For those not aware, a wrestler can quit anytime but the company will hold them to their contract so he cant work for another wrestling company until his contract is up. There have been exceptions with some people (Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk) so its possible that something can be worked out but it would be hard to see WWE agreeing to let him go work for a company like ROH or TNA.

The two head writers he referenced in his statement on Sunday were Ed Koskey, as the Brian Gerwitz wannabe, and Ryan Ward, the guy he said that would hit on the Divas.

Well that stinks. I would have loved one more Cody Rhodes run, but doesn't look like we'll ever get that.

Cody will never be more than a mid-card guy in WWE but he'd beast on the Indy circuit. I think it's shitty WWE is putting the screws to him on his contract but hey, Cody should've gone quietly. Or at least hold off on talking shit until you know the contract has been put into the shredder. Live and learn.
