The St. Louis Blues on Friday named forward David Backes as the 20th captain in franchise history.
Barrett Jackman, Jamie Langenbrunner, Andy McDonald and Alex Steen were named as alternate captains.
Backes, 27, joins a list of Blues captains that includes Hall of Fame inductees Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Bernie Federko, Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens. Originally drafted by the Blues in the second round (No. 62) in the 2003 Entry Draft, Backes has spent all five NHL seasons with the club, scoring 102 goals and compiling 218 points in 364 games, along with 500 penalty minutes. He's coming off a career-best 31-goal, 62-point season during which he went plus-32 and was selected to the All-Star Game.
Backes' plus-32 rating led all NHL forwards in 2010-11 and he became the first Blues player to finish a season with at least 30 goals, 30 assists and a plus-30 rating since the franchise entered the NHL in 1967.
Jackman, 30, is the longest tenured current Blue; he's entering his 10th season with the club. He currently ranks fifth on the Blues' all-time games played list among defenseman (517).
