Alex Smith to start for 49ers

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary has decided that Alex Smith will get the start at quarterback this week, according to NFL Network reporter Jason La Canfora.

La Confora tweeted that Singletary met with his coaching staff on Monday and decided to make the change.

The coach previously had benched Smith in favor of Troy Smith, who won three games in five starts.

Multiple media outlets reported that Singletary now favors Alex Smith’s knowledge of the offense over Troy Smith’s and ability to improvise.

Troy Smith’s accuracy was also fading. He completed just 10-of-25 passes in a loss to Green Bay on Sunday.

If there's any Mike Singletary supporters left out there...you need to read this story and change ur state of mind. Troy Smith is no great starting quarterback but the guy has clearly outperformed any other on San Francisco's roster. What good is how much better Alex Smith knows the offense when he 90% of the decisions he makes with the ball are bad ones? Troy Smith may improvise most of his game but he adds a level of unpredictability to the Niners' bad offense and he's managed some Vince Young-esque ways to win games. Sounds to me like the 49ers gameplan this week involves a lot of Brian Westbrook.

The season's already down the drain, you would think Singletary would go with the guy who's lead them to more wins. This guy needs to be out on his ass after the season.

Alex Smith has had his moments. He has strung some real nice drives together, the problem is consistency.

I'm glad he is starting again.

He's average at best but he's the best QB on the roster. Troy Smith is nothing special. His wins weren't too impressive honestly.

This is just leading up to the era of Cam

The Niners have had 4 good QBs in their entire history.

Tittle, Montana, Young, Garcia.

Then there was:

Steve Spurrier - bust
Steve DeBerg - turnover prone
Jim Druckenmiller - BUST
Tim Rattay - Inconsistent
Ken Dorsey - Bust
Cody Pickett - Nobody
Shaun Hill - didn't work out
Alex Smith - bust in the making
Troy Smith - first 2 games were flukes
David Carr - <Censored>ING SUCKS

Y.A. Tittle, lol, what a name.

I still respect Singletary for giving Smith the nod. Too bad he didn't perform like the rest of the players taken from the greatest college football team to ever play.

Unless it's with a 3rd round pick, I don't want Cam, and looking at it this way, Mallett, Locker, and Luck will be gone by the time the 49ers pick, so I just say they improve the secondary which is a MUCH bigger need than a QB, the offensive problems with the 49ers are due to Singletary forcing his 1985 philosophy down their throats and he never lets the QBs do anything. A new coach with a new coaching staff could do wonders with this team.

I disagree with a few statements up there. I don't think the problem is with Singletary, as you can't solely blame the way the team is coached. There are a couple problems out there that need to be addressed. And I don't see why people wouldn't be high on Cam in the 1st round. He's proven he can win, and he's proven he's a top QB. Dude has all the tools necessary to succeed, now he just needs to put on a show at the National Championship game and at the combine.

Believe in Cam

49ers just need a QB that can be consistent every weekend, I don't think Mike Singletary is the problem with the 49ers, he's just been hurting at a few positions that's really holding back the team. The 49ers have a pretty good defense, they just need to get an offense that can play every weekend at a higher level.

Singletary isn't the problem, I agree. It's not his fault that he has no one to throw the ball.

Singletary IS the main problem, and it took Frank Gore getting hurt for him to change the playcalling, which was "run-run-pass-punt", which is why they got blown out by the Seahawks and Chiefs earlier in the season. He gets outcoached pretty much EVERY <Censored>ing game. For example, the Green Bay game, the 49ers are down 14-13 going into the half, Singletary makes ZERO adjustments and the 49ers score 3 points the rest of the game. From watching the 49ers, his playcalling is moronic. He doesn't "call the plays", but he heavily influences Mike Johnson, the OC, and doesn't allow for the QBs to do anything, which is why they've looked bad. Alex Smith has looked best when he's run a 2 minute drill and calls his own plays, but otherwise Singletary has ###### this team over. He thinks that running the ball 80% of the time, regardless of the result, will win games. So if Frank Gore runs twice and gets stuffed, the next drive, what does he do?? Have Frank Gore run the ball up the gut another 2 times, it's frustrating. Now Singletary isn't the ONLY problem, the secondary, pass rush, and QB play are other problems (in order of importance), but Singletary needs to go, and if they can get an offensive minded head coach (like a Gruden), this team will go places and this offense will start to do considerably better. Also, notice when Gore was gone, Singletary was forced to mix up the offense more, and the 49ers were able to put up 30 points in one half when they hadn't put up 30 all year. Coaching is a huge problem.

No he isn't.

Let's not forget last season in which Vernon Davis -- whom many thought was a bust -- had a break-out season, how does that make the play list "run-run-pass-punt". He has a good weapon in Frank Gore, and they drafted to highly touted linemen to help build the line. They knew in the off-season that the running game was going to be the main focus, who didn't?

You have to understand that the battle on the field is checkers; however, the battle of the coaches is chess. Maybe Mike thought that Green Bay was expecting something -- who knows -- but he's not the main problem.

San Fransico has a lot of good young players and if they trade Gore away and draft a young runningback they will be only better. The reason he doesn't let the QB's do anything is because they all suck. Post proof that he influenced all the play-calling on offense, because we all know he's not an offensive-minded coach.

They don't need to go to a 4-3, Singletary is arguably the greatest 3-4 linebacker of all-time and knows what he's doing.

It's hard to let the QB's do anything when they're throwing it to the opposing team and 100 feet away from the intended WR, that's a problem. So, you are saying you trust Alex Smith to be your QB in the future? I bet 99.9% of 49ers fans would disagree with that.

I didn't know we were in "last year". This year is completely different, and actually, this is pretty much why you guys shut us out (if you watched that game). You guys were committed to stopping Gore, and you did, but Singletary kept attempting to get Gore going, it was frustrating. We need to go to a 4-3 to center the defense more around Willis, and because we aren't generating any sort of pass rush, which you need if you're going to run a 3-4. I know we have all this talent, but the gameplan doesn't allow the QBs to utilize the talent because Singletary runs it 80% of the time with Gore, which is why we are in the hole we're in. I understand that the offense is built around the run, but when it doesn't work, then you let Alex Smith run the spread and start slinging it, because he can effectively run a spread, and if you get the passing game going, then a few draws out of the spread, and the offense is rolling, but Singletary runs the 2 TE sets and runs it up the gut, and NOWHERE ELSE. Once the team gets down by like 3 TDs, he likes to throw the ball. He heavily influences the playcalling because it's been 2 OCs this season, same <Censored>, and Mike Johnson said he wanted to run a spread, never happened. He wants to run a smashmouth offense, which is ok, until it fails, and then he just continues to do it.
