They were ranked 32nd because they had a historically bad run blocking offensive line.
 
The team YPC was actually higher without AP last season.

37 touches in what was pretty much three full games is a decent enough sample size.  The Vikings obviously aren't a better team without AP, but the line was so bad that whoever they had at running back last season really would have made no positive difference.
