We will be starting our 4th annual SI player rankings.  Last year the player rankings generated 388 responses, that's less than 8 responses per thread.  I'm hoping this year we get above 500.  Don't be afraid to share your opinion, whether it's a popular one or not.  We will once again be going 10 spots deep at all 5 positions.

Please remember these two things, please vote on the polls and vote for the best player, don't be a homer.  Most of the polls will be open 24 hours, but if the first place vote getter gets 5 or more votes than the second vote getter than I will close the thread if I'm around.

Remember, this is based on who is currently the best player, not who has the potential to be the best.  Who would you take today?

Nola:

Why couldn't Terrence Ross hypothetically be the SF? That's how he's listed

But then this also goes down to the whole "where they play" vs. "what their true position is".

For instance, either LeBron James or Battier started most of Miami's games at PF, but neither is actually a PF?

I just don't get why we have Terrence Ross as a SG, and DeRozan as a SF, where every place, EVEN THE RAPTORS OWN OFFICIAL WEBSITE, lists Ross as the forward and DeRozan as the guard, just because Nola thinks otherwise

Seriously, you are the only person who thinks Ross is the SG and Demar is the SF. The ONLY one. NBA 2K, ESPN, Basketball-Reference, Raptors.com, Yahoo, etc all list DeRozan as the SG.

Just watch the games, that's all I'm going to say. I even went back and glanced over Raptors games when I got home from work to make sure I wasn't wrong, and I wasn't. It's nice that y'all spend time looking up what position they are labeled as, but use your time better and go find out for yourself. You'll see there is no possible way they played DeRozan at guard and Ross at forward. It's clear as day from the moment you start watching.

I took what you did: I typed on YouTube "Raptors 2014" and played the first game I saw, which was Game 2 vs the Nets

Opening lineups, said Ross at F, DeRozan at G. Brooklyn started JJ at F, and Livvy at G. First offensive possession, Johnson was guarding Ross and Livvy was guarding DeRozan. On BKN's offensive possession, Demar guarded Livvy, and Ross guarded Johnson.

I stopped watching after that, didn't need to see any more. Demar is the SG.

Nola I think you take positions to be way too cut and dry in today's NBA. Why can't a team start three guards if they want to? One of them doesn't "have to" be a SF. Teams can play small. Teams can play big. Look at the Nets this year. Is Paul Pierce a PF? Is Shaun Livingston a SG? No. The Miami Heat should have taught us over the past few years that you don't have to start a traditional 1-2-3-4-5 in order to succeed.

But more importantly than that, where's the freedom in this? Why is it "what nola says, goes"? If somebody wants to vote for Derozan as the best SG in the NBA (or 2nd best, or 3rd, etc.), why can't they? It just seems like you're letting your own personal judgement on a lot of things cloud over what should be a fun thing for the board to do. I know you're probably not going to change the way you run it no matter how much people want you to, but just think about it man. This could be run a lot better if you just relaxed a little and let people actually vote for who they want.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see this was locked. I'll repost in the next thread.

Believe me, I'm the last person you have to talk to about positions. I created the "positions don't exist" and "positions are just for casual fans" movement on this board years ago, and I was the only person on that wagon for a long time. I took tons of flack for it to. Hell I still may be one of the few that is on it.

With that said though, if you want to run it more conventional with positions I'm on board with that. I'll even talk with you privately about where a guy should be put if there is any doubt on my end.
