I think you could put any fanbase in that situation and the result would be the same.
Same situation meaning never won a title, one game away and playing against the villains of the decade.

I don't see how taking another sample of 20.000 people would make any difference.

Yeah because their own players orchestrated it. Watch the reaction from Jurassic Park when he goes down. There are also multiple videos from bars around Toronto cheering too. They look so bad.
