thats still for the fringe nba players tho. they have to let the first rounders and lottery players have that ability too
While I fully support the thesis behind it, imagine something like Cleveland not getting the #1 pick when they drafted LBJ. Some other team drafts him, he decides he didn't want to play unless it was for Cleveland. That team is out the #1 overall pick now? That's a huge set back. I guess that'll add a whole new level to the pre-draft scouting and such, figure out if you draft a guy if he's going to sign with you or go to college, but those are very large risks in the NBA whereas the MLB has a much deeper draft as well as minor league teams to absorb the loss of a higher round selection.

That was their original plan yes. But that plan also counted for USA basketball telling them who those fringe players are, to which I heard USA Basketball was unaware and unwilling to do that.

That doesn't really change from things how they currently are though. Guys can tell a team he won't play for them. They can still draft him but he can hold out or whatnot. That wouldn't be a new thing. Kobe Bryant I heard did that, Eli Manning did that to name a few.

Sure Kobe did it, and got the trade to LA where he wanted to play. But imagine if he had actual leverage of not signing and going to college instead? A team is stuck with zero leverage either trade him for whatever the team the guy wants to play for will offer, or lose your top selection

I would assume there will be restrictions. Like the team that drafts you is the only team eligible to sign you for a year unless they trade your rights...etc. So teams can still draft who they want.

It'll be interesting if it ends up happening what all the specifics will be.

Also just realized, its not for drafted guys. Players who are drafted lose eligibility. Players who aren't drafted still have the option of going back to school.

Manu retiring

freakinf legend. One of my favorite players of all time

I patterned my lefty shot after him

Became a harden fan cause he reminded me of Manu

Manu will be missed man.

Spurs without Manu, Tony, Tim and Kawhi. A new era indeed

Yep Murray could look really nice if a jumper starts falling. I think the Spurs will do well next season. I think Pop will get Demar and Poeltl doing very well in his system.

could still do what mlb does and drafted team may hold rights. they would be able to trade those rights for whatever. just model it after the mlb. it works there. it would work here.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA were only offering the eligibility to players who weren't drafted. But could be wrong.

And the MLB model seems weird to me but I don't know a ton about it. I feel like I could get drafted by the MLB as a prospect lol.

Only thing to change which the NBA currently has is a rookie contract scale so there's no negotiation needed and players have no reason to hold out.

The MLB has 40 rounds. The NBA has 2.

Is 40 necessary? I guess so with the AAAs, AAs, and As, but just seems like a lot.

Its always hard watching players age and then retire. Wade will probably be retiring soon as well in within a year or two. Dirk as well. Bosh, Melo maybe, they are all getting there. Bosh probably already is.

It is considering that a number of the players taken in the later rounds don't accept the contract.

Yeah that rumor keeps popping up every so many months, and I would love if he came back, but don't see it happening unfortunately.
