I honestly don't think they are shooting themselves in the foot. From the moment the trade demand came out it has been in their best interest as a team to wait till summer. Collect their offers and take the best one.

Some people are just misinformed and uneducated. It couldnt be any more obvious that the Pelicans benefit from waiting, but numerous geniuses on this board dont recognize that.

With so much money to spend in the offseason (convincing someone to come play in SAC is another story) I think they might sit on their assets and hope to sign someone. But if they can bring in someone like a Kanter or another guy that won't cost a lot they will.

Celtics will be aggressive this summer for AD. Probably without Tatum, but still they will make a competitive offer. 
 
Knicks may not get #1, pretty unlikely they do. But they can still package whatever it is to the Pels.
 
Whoever gets #1 could offer that to the Pels.
 
The Lakers will still offer to compete with the other offers.
