Athletes are on a completely different schedule, they work at like 8pm at night. 8:30 is probably pretty early

To address the first part, they go to the stadium way earlier than when the games start for shootaround/treatment/etc.

No it's not early for most people but for athletes with their type of schedule I would imagine it is

Blame dwight and the rest of the bums for not performing up to their standards, where kobe had to put them on his damn shoulders and will them to the playoffs
