Well yea

I mean bro, its no secret pop controls every little thing for that organization

Of course pop is the puppet master. After 20 years of so much success, of course he is. And it should be respected bc obviously his way is working

If Kawhi doesnt like that, so be it but lets not forget why Kawhi is so big these days. Bc pop and the spurs got him to where he is today, they believed

I just dont get why he’d want to leave the Spurs, man. Always winning, goat coach, leader etc

Just surprised at all these actions by him

Why do big time players usually wanna leave?

Either the team isnt in win now mode or just doesnt have the culture of ever winning and are always at the bottom so they want a real winning team, a real system, a real coach

Or theres alpha ego problems between stars and one of them decides to spread the wings and leave

Kawhi has the best of both worlds, so why leave that?

Spurs wont be on a decline as long as Pop is there. Do we see the players that have the 4th seed in the West right now without Kawhi? Its impressive.

That being said, maybe he knows that Pop is retiring soon. Thatd explain a lot

that's literally the point tho. pop's the 2nd oldest coach in nba history, and like a year or two away from being the #1 oldest (when kawhi's contract expires).

You think that by the time Kawhi opts out in June 2019 that he'll see longevity in the Spurs organization? There isn't young replenishing talent like there is in Boston or LA. The #2 scoring option is a 33 year old Lamarcus Aldridge, with 31 year old Patty Mills being the only other guy under contract currently. They'll have ~$25M in cap space after factoring in Pau's dead money and Kawhi's max deal in place, and that's with just Kawhi, Mills, and Lamarcus under contract. That's a 1st round exit bound to occur with nothing coming in with fresh blood.

Let's be real here -- even less Kawhi, Pop isn't staying past that breakdown. They've had a great run, but its time to rebuild and you don't keep Kawhi to do that. There's no incentive for Kawhi to stay, and therefore is smartly holding out to avoid an IT-situation. The Spurs need to trade Leonard this offseason, for the same reasons Jimmy Butler and Paul George were traded.

I wont believe in Spurs rebuilding until i see it

Pop is old to coach maybe, but is he old to be the president of operations? To stay running things just how he is now while having Messina as the head coach and still be the puppet master of the organization. Ever think about that?

Jerry west is old as shit and still doing his thing. Why wouldnt Pop want to win more?

And as long as Pop is part of the organization, he will always be able to build a contender as we’ve seen year after year

If Kawhi doesnt trust Pops ability by now, then idk what to tell him

Anyway, we dont know what really going on and what its all about. We’ll just have to wait to find out

Who traded for him? Who gave him a chance? Who saw something special in him that everyone ignored(esp the pacers) ?

The Spurs

Now he’s good and gonna get big headed like this?

Nah

Its fine when guys leave bum ass organizations because winning> of course

But he’s winning with the spurs every single year. Part of one of the best organizations in nba history. Best coach of all time. Leader of the team

What else does he want, man. Players pray and wish they played for the spurs and coach pop
It's almost as if not everyone values the same thing

Whether he's staying or leaving, its without question that he's holding out after what happened to Isaiah. IT went from a guy averaging 29ppg and could earn $23M+ per year, to a guy who honestly might not even make $12M/yr.

Get healthy, then play. And then get paid.

What should he value then?

You think the players think they're where they are only because of the coaches? Nah these guys think they'd get to where they are regardless of who is or isn't their coach. They don't get this far without being confident in their abilities

He should value whatever the fuck he wants, it's his life who am I (or you) to tell him how to live it?

I agree there but this is a unique situation where no one knew who Kawhi was when pacers drafted him. No one talked about him, no one thought he’d be anything special at all and Spurs/Pop out of nowhere trades for him and puts the trust in him completely despite him not being special on offense at all the first year or two

Sometimes its not all about the player just getting good but also about the opportunity they get and the luck that comes with getting on the right team

We’re having a discussion and i asked why would he ever leave the Spurs

Obviously you have no answer so this is your only response

teams have fallout periods. the bulls were awful for a 6 year span after jordan left. the celtics were pretty mediocre after bird and mchale retired (granted they got screwed with reggie lewis but still).

era's close, and you need to be able to take advantage and rebuild when you can. its time for the spurs to call it quits now. they aren't contending with the warriors any time soon

Read your first paragraph. You said when MJ “left” , when Bird Mchale “retired”

Thats when teams called it quits

Kawhi is young and has shown that the Spurs are contenders with him, why call it quits now?

Why did Kyrie request the Spurs then if apparently its so obvious that its time for them to call it quits?

And the Spurs have benefited from that as much as Kawhi

I don't have an answer because I don't know Kawhi, there's clearly something going on there and if the relationship is fractured how is he supposed to keep playing there? He might want to leave because he doesn't value everything they provide as much as other stuff, or maybe he doesn't think they can win there
