They were first going for a harris lob, then jeremi fell and wilson was under the basket. Jokic took steps on the sideline(which is actually not allowed in the nba, just europe) like he was going to throw it there, you can even see Russ flinching a bit expecting a pass to wilson

If Wilson doesnt run over Jerami with that charge, none of this happens. They would have switched and jerami would have contested it. Russ was stuck on an island guarding two people and always have to guard the rim and ball side first so it doesnt end up an easy lay up

Not to mention he actually contested it quite well almost got his fingertips on that ball, just a good shot by Harris

Chandler is in the process of releasing his screen, and Harris is already detached from Westbrook. There is no current roll to the hoop, and not only that but Russ is also just not communicating with anybody. I have no problem with him being a free-safety on the play, because I would do the same thing, but there's no zone communication to get a wing to follow the outside.
 

 
You can't say that's Jerami's responsibility, because there is no zone call on the play -- and if it were, then Grant was to guard the top and George the wing. The fact that those two followed their men clearly shows its a man call, and the Russ switches to a zone without communicating, and Grant clearly is not aware of that, even before getting trucked over. 
 
It's just a classic case of Westbrook doing whatever he wants to do. He often would rather run a junk-zone defense off a man look than to follow his guy around the perimeter. I still point to that video last year of Westbrook abandoning Steph Curry around the screen so he could go box out -- except that left a wide open Curry three.
 
You just have to communicate if you're going to freelance, and he doesn't. That's the "laziness" aspect in him that I refer to. Harden's a dumb defender, with a lacking of on-court BBIQ at times, but he's not nearly as "lazy" as Russ is.

Point is to be safety around the rim in this situation, he didnt need to be all over Harris all the way on the weak side but once the ball was passed i assume he thought Jerami would be there to contest, but then noticed he was on ground and was just .03 or so late on the reaction and that was enough for Harris to get a rhythm three. If Wilson isnt by Russ basically next to him, Russ wouldnt have thought Jerami is also there and that Jerami will be there to contest if a pass goes there. If Wilson and Jerami werent there at all he would have went to Harris without hesitation and gotten there right on time. It was just a confusing situation with Grant being on the floor especially when every little second counts

Either way like i said before he contested it quite well all things considered, just a good shot

Just dont think you can call this situation lazy, its a fast sport, shit just happens so quick and a lil hesitation here or there and its over

When the ball is in the corner for example, even if youre playing man to man, you dont stick your man. You rotate. Have weak side help. When the ball gets to the top of the key, then you rotate back to your man and stick him.

What russ was doing was exactly what he was supposed to do. Guarding the ball side with help in the paint incase of a lob or a quick drive to the rim.

He was supposed to be moved up a lil more towards the free throw line bc Harris wasnt in the corner, he moved out to the right wing. And that was the difference of that .03 seconds or so. Just needed to be more closer to the right block where he can help incase someone drives or lobs and also have time to get back on harris is its a skip pass like that
