I have no idea why players don't just throw the ball out of bounds on busted runs to the outside behind the line of scrimmage. I guess there is a risk there, but it doesn't seem that difficult to just flick it out of bounds.

99% of the time there would be an ineligible receiver downfield on a designed run play.
