I got what you were saying, I just don't like generalizing it to MVP awards. I don't think the perception of his career should or would have been changed had he beaten Mauer for MVP 5 years ago (it's still hilarious people were arguing for Jeter that year), or had he topped Morneau 8 years ago (argument could be made neither of them were deserving).

Jeter was born in Michigan, do you know what baseball team plays there? DO YOU?

I agree. Some people I know who really know baseball history laugh if you mention him in the convo for even best SS ever.

I like Derek Jeter but

this. Which is why I loved Olberbermann's comment about how people think he's the best because they saw him play.

also, some guy had way too much time on his hands:

Now calculating Even Meek’s pitching in the last 7 months:

Avg Speed Delta of Mean Variance (Theta^2)
90.1 -1.357 1.841 Mean: 91.457
90.2 -1.257 1.580 Variance: 1.272
90.6 -0.857 0.734 Std Dev: 2.984
92.1 0.643 0.413
91.6 0.143 0.020
92.2 0.743 0.551
93.4 1.943 3.770
91.457 8.909

Variance: 8.909 / 7 = 1.272
Standard Deviation = Sq. Rt of 8.909 = 2.984
91.457(Average FB) – 86.1(Jeter FB) = 5.357mph
5.357mph (Delta of Avg FB and Jeter FBs) / 2.984 (Std. Dev) = 1.795 Standard Deviations from the mean
1.8 Std Deviations = .96407 %
1 – .96407 = .03593% Chance
Jeter’s BA: .255 Std. Deviation %: .03593
.255 (Jetere BA) = 1 in 3.921 .03593 (FB @ 86.1 mph %) = 1 in 27.831
Chances of Derek Jeter Getting a hit on a 86.1 mph Fastball from Evan Meek: 1/109.12 chance
Derek Jeter had a 0.9 % Chance of doing that naturally last night

I actually think people underrate current day players because they're afraid to annoint people or say they're better than past guys. If you look at Mike Trout, I dont think it's unreasonable to say he's on pace to be a top 10 non-pitcher ever, but I imagine most people would look at me like I'm insane. The Jeter stuff is purely because he's a Yankee and he's seen as the one wholesome dude they have. He won a lot of rings to start his career which got the hype going

I like Jeter because he's spent his whole career as a yankee, done it clean, and is one of the best hitters to ever play baseball.

Willie Mays hit 400 more homers than Jeter. I'm not sure why you would even use Mays as a reference point
