I can see why he did it in the 9th but when it's tied in extras and you've got a runner on 1st with no one out that is not the time to give away an out.
I can see the argument but with two chances to get the tying run in from second, you have decent odds.

All the hot takes on Twitter about "statheads" being wrong about the bunt, despite it being a common sense thing to not bunt, and barely a stat thing
It's common sense to not bunt in most situations, but if you're playing for one run it makes plenty of sense to bunt. I'm sorry you can't grasp that

When you're playing for one run you have to do what it takes to get the runner over. Obviously he could've tried to steal second and then sacrifice him to third or steal both but there's way more risk in that.

Bunting is a key part of baseball and even Billy Beane and the A's have adapted their philosophies to include it after coming out being so "anti-bunt" for a while.
I could careless about what Billy Beane thinks about it. His opinion is not why it was dumb 10 years ago and why its still dumb now

I guess all of these MLB managers are dumb then and all these statheads sitting on their couch should be the real managers

well you might as well just shut down the forum and any form of public opinion because that settles any dispute of higher authority

The dude batting had 45 career at-bats. You're likely giving up an out either way, it's just a matter of whether or not you want to advance the runner while you do it.

Personally if I need one run I want to make sure I get a guy in scoring position.

Hold up, how does having a minimal amount of at bats have to do with giving up an out?

The A's potentially advancing clearly validtates statheads, in a game based entirely off stats!

That dude wasn't about to get a hit haha. Even if a guy is truly a .333 hitter that means there's a .667 chance he doesn't get one. I'd go further into this seeing as statistics is my thing and all but it's late and I'm working on HW. Might look into it tomorrow.

I'm not trolling. People who think bunting is a bad move when you only need one run are idiots.

Here's the basis of it: by bunting, you're giving up a third of your outs for the inning. One third. That's significant.

The only time I'll support a bunt is if you only need a run and a man is on 2nd with no outs or the pitcher is up. Only way

Why not give him an opportunity to get on base? What if the lead off runner was forced out at 2nd? Having two baserunners is better than having one.

The odds of Hosmer getting to second on a sacrifice bunt is much better than the odds of him getting to second otherwise. That's the point! Having multiple base runners doesn't matter if you're playing for ONE run. The only thing that matters is getting that lead guy to home.

Like I wouldn't bunt in the first inning or anything. But if you need a run, it's smart.

If the Royals score, was the Athletics bunt stupid since they need more runs ?
