The Boston Red Sox have hired John Farrell as their next manager, a source confirmed to ESPNBoston.com's Joe McDonald on Saturday night.

The sides agreed to a multiyear deal, the source told McDonald. An official announcement is expected later Saturday night.

Farrell, the Red Sox' former pitching coach, had one year remaining on his contract as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. There was no word on the compensation the Red Sox gave to the Blue Jays to obtain Farrell.

One source earlier this week guessed it would take a player or players of "substantial value," though he did not have direct knowledge of the secretive negotiations between the teams, which began earlier this week.

The Red Sox formally interviewed four candidates -- Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach, New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus and Baltimore Orioles third-base coach DeMarlo Hale -- to replace Bobby Valentine, but Farrell had been "at the top of their list" from the start, a team source told ESPNBoston.com earlier this month.

Farrell served as the Red Sox's pitching coach from 2007 through 2010.

The Red Sox attempted to acquire Farrell a year ago, but they weren't willing to bow to Toronto's asking price of what was rumored to be pitchers Clay Buchholz and/or Daniel Bard.

The Red Sox eventually hired Valentine, then fired him the day after finishing their worst season (69-93) in more than four decades.

I would have rather had Ausmus

Have fun with his constant bunting and dumb bullpen managing.

EDIT: Aviles to Jays, Lind and JF to Boston

Yeeeahh got rid of Lind's contract and got a solid utility guy for a manager.

This is how I see it

1. Iglesias is ready for the big leagues
2. We already had the #6 offense in baseball, we just had awful pitching

Farrell will help out this teams pitching dramatically. And Lind is huge, because he'll provide a bat that we've lacked since trading Adrian

No he won't. He's terrible.

This probably means that SS is Jose Iglesias' position to lose this season, finally. Feel like he's been lurking to take the position for forever now and still hasn't done it. He can field, but there's no way he hits enough to be considered an everyday SS.

Also could mean the end of Yunel in Toronto. They need to give the SS spot to Adeiny.

There are suggestions that first base coach Torey Lovullo, third base coach Brian Butterfield, and extra coach Luis Rivera may now follow Farrell to the Red Sox, writes Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.
Alomar Jr is in the lead for the job

I'd like to see the Jays not sell low on Esco. All attitude issues aside, I think he'll bounce back and have a good year. I'd say give Hech the 2B spot next season and Aviles as a utility guy.

Why would you play Adeiny at 2B instead of SS, where he's a considerably better defender than Yunel.

Because you can? At least for the first half of the season. If Escobar bounces back, then you can sell high on him.

Yea what Baggs said. Obviously a move to 2B will hurt either players' value but it's not like the Jays are trading Adeiny. Might as well give Yunel a chance at short and see what he can do. Adeiny at 2B will be a short term thing.

Unless you're actually trying to win, than putting your best possible lineup out there everyday is worth more than building up trade value.

The Red Sox announced that they've hired longtime Blue Jays coach Brian Butterfield to coach third base in Boston. Butterfield joins manager John Farrell and bench coach Torey Lovullo as former Blue Jays personnel in Boston.

SMH. I'm mad... I love Butterfield. There goes our whole management.
